Shaw Univ. & St. Augustine’s Univ. (Raleigh’s HBCUs)

just wondering, could the CC system n or another university just have these function urban satellites? i thought there was housing at both univs. - shaw and saint aug? i thought campbell had something downtown.

Not sure you know today meeting change my feelings on Mary Black I don’t think she’s NIMBY, I can see she leaning toward pro development with some neutrality. Jane Harrison is a straight up NIMBY.

So it sounds like council voted 7-0 to continue hearing this rezoning on May 2 to allow additional comments and time for discussion.

Im okay with it surprisingly, I think it could pass we just have to get Mary Black to approve and I think she will someone on this forum was right she isn’t the boogeyman I thought she’d be and that’s good. NIMBY Jane Harrison won’t approve of it, most of the council i think agrees to the consensus of doing more discussions. But I think I’ll still pass. The point is engagement and I think that’s fair. These people went to the college.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but reading some of the complaints from “Save our Shaw” indicated the current plans have demolishing the bell tower, founders grave site and Debnam hall in the center of campus for a public walkway or street? Is that true?

If so, that is incredibly stupid, and I can understand their complaints. Shaw has tons of worthless properties that never get used, and those should be sold first before the main campus is even mentioned.

I have never, not once, seen someone walk inside this “Student success center” this is a couple Million alone:

IndyWeek actually has a decent article about the rezoning: https://news.shawu.edu/the-shawu-district/shaw-university-plans-to-develop-its-campus-to-bring-in-more-revenue-and-grow/

Sounds like they don’t even have a master plan yet, and are committed to saving the six main historic buildings on campus (although they’ll move two of them):

Much of the outcry has come over the two other buildings, the Rogers-Bagley-Daniels-Pegues House and the Charles Frazier House, both of which the university plans to relocate. These two buildings are located north of Shaw’s main campus inside the Prince Hall Historic Overlay District, a residential neighborhood that prizes its historic status.

This entire area should be designed with the history of the school in mind. It would probably be favorable to those opposed, if the school emphasized that the designs of the buildings will be replicas of the original buildings that were once on the campus. If not exact replicas, the buildings could be influenced by the historic designs used during that time. ($$$)

I think that’s a great compromise preserve the historic ones while still modernizing the campus.

Please indulge me. Look I’m gonna disclose this because I had a nice debate with friends at Shaw until they made it uncivil. Please excuse some of my grammar, as I was typing this on my phone and I didn’t feel like doing it on my computer not air dropping this screenshots onto my Macbook.

I asked them about Shaws Debt and the money and grants they have had trouble with. And some of the trustee facing federal prison for it

They pointed out the problem with grants they’ve received. I pointed our that those are grants not Shaws Money

I later told them the city isn’t responsible for any internaluzed corruption, even Stormie Forte said at last Council meeting that they’re here to approve a rezoning not a internal issue. And I told them to take that up with the board. That when they accused me of essentially supporting the corruption though I didn’t say that. And they went on to insult special needs people.

They later went to block me, after I pointed this out look I understand the emotional connection but you cannot insult people and I will do a Tiktok on this, I want all of Raleigh to know about these people’s xenophobia

I don’t think you’re off base. Shaw’s own internal issues aren’t part of the zoning conversation. The people that need to be considered in zoning are the property holders, the residents that live nearby that this impacts, as well as what the general plan is for the city of Raleigh.

I don’t want to simplify it too much, because alumni are absolutely part of a lifelong community, but I don’t have a say in how NC State decides to rezone its own campus. The former alumni of Shaw are allowed to have an opinion, but it’s not part of the rezoning process.

I told them that, and Stormie Forte pointed that out too.

on a broad ‘note’, shaw and nccu gave me what ever small jazz vocabulary i have now growing up in raleigh. if shaw isnt viable as an education facility now and if the land and existing facilities cant be integrated into a state education satellite downtown, it saddens me. but if that cant happen make it is dense as you can i suppose.

I wanted to see the historic properties that are conditioned to be preserved in this Shaw rezoning case. I put those photos as well as some other thoughts in this blog post.

Next public hearing on this is May 2.

Maybe they could create a new “Shaw Main Street” along Blount or Wilmington, give it that collegiate feel.

I would love that!

Oh shoot! That’s all I can say.

Im afraid if these yahoos win and this get deny I’ll give them more power and think they can deny every 40 story rezoning. Becasue there using social justice to push there anti-growth agenda these people are a threat they and I have showed you don’t wanna debate it there way or the highway. We cannot let them grow and get no bigger next year.

No vote. Seems the mosque issue has become intertwined with this rezoning.

Lol what the hell?

There’s a lot going on in this rezoning that makes sense to intertwine, but this feels absurd. Council of Slow edging over into Council of No territory.
