Should be a vote by City Council at 1pm today. Not very optimistic about this getting approved. Will it be another delay for “discussion” or an outright denial?
Can you view ahead of time who’s speaking in favor or in opposition?
If there’s 5 against and 1 for, regardless of how compelling or beneficial it may be for the city and its residents. This is the ultimate decision making step. Genius, I know.
There’s so much here I think it can go either way.

I’ve watched most of the discussions and board meetings on this in full. I think the odds are in favor of it getting approved despite all the objections. The council has warned the constituents dozens of times that this is a ‘Rezoning Request’ and the items that they’re bringing in (opinion of former students, the temple, corruption, etc.) don’t and/or shouldn’t have an impact on the rezoning discussion.
Politically speaking, if they vote, I see 5-3 or 6-2. However, there’s going to be a lot of pressure within that building to vote the other way (and a lot of yelling if it passes). Those other items are different discussions than a rezoning request and there’s really no more knowledge to be shared here by Shaw or to be gained by the interested parties.
Get your popcorn ready.
NBC’s “Parks and Recreation” was a documentary.
Yeah I’m kinda hopeless on this honestly if it gets shot down I won’t be surprised. I could see Megan Patton being the deciding vote. I know the other 3 “equitiness” folks are gonna vote against it. The Kristen Sinema of the council is her, everything comes down to her.
Y’all let me know what happens.
This public hearing is nuts. And they just voted to deny. Branch and MAB in favor. And then Melton. And then they retook the vote and it passed 5-3! I’m so completely lost with this. Lol!
Sorry, posted too soon and edited my comment.
The vote has PASSED. Harrison gives some thoughts at the last moment and ultimately votes in favor. 5-3.
What a wild thing to watch
Ultimately Melton, Branch, Baldwin, Forte, and Harrison voted for. Patton, Jones, and Black against.
So the rezoning passed?
Important to note that NCSU had an extremely easy time rezoning Centennial Campus and has billions of dollars in funds and equity.
Shaw is just trying to survive, very little money, and has faced an uphill battle for this rezoning.
Yes, it has passed. It’s all done. Lots of tension and yelling in the room as the council heads to a break.
Branch moved to pass it and several moments went by before Baldwin seconded it. It looked like it was going to fail at first.
The mosque property is probably prime redevelopment land. An opportunity to build a better mosque somewhere else like the Catholic Cathedral did recently?
Now if only the Catholic Church can sell some of their downtown property that would be great. And also all the other churches.
I wouldn’t normally pat myself on the back, but I absolutely nailed the prediction. This is a rezoning case, it’s not a “Shaw is corrupt” case. As soon as they pulled out of the Prince Hall district, the writing was on the wall.
I hope so! I imagine the Muslim population in Raleigh is significantly lower than Catholic or Hindu, but the Centennial Cathedral and Hindu Temple (in Cary) are spectacular buildings. I hope they get something good out of this.
Wow, I didn’t invest much emotional energy in this thinking the loud minority would cause a self-destructive outcome. Congratulations to Shaw and the city!
Shaw is being shady about why they’re keeping it closed, and the Muslim community won’t be able to use the proceeds from its redevelopment to build a new mosque since Shaw will pocket them, but trying to block the rezoning over it hurts the city at large.
Ofc the 3 amigas denied it even though I personally talked to her about how important this rezoning was.
