Shaw Univ. & St. Augustine’s Univ. (Raleigh’s HBCUs)

I’m guessing they only have two options permanently donate that land to an Islamic group to maintain the mosque forever. Or seek financial stabilization of Shaw University as a whole by rezoning the land they own which the mosque is on and asking the mosque to move.

Of course asking for religious institution to move in America is a bad PR move.

No it was so called “friends of Shaw”, using white supremacy as there chomping ground of defense. And using irrelevant talking points like the Mosque which had nothing to do with this as a issue. Can’t wait to see there tears.

For those just seeing this rezoning case for the first time (a lot of discussion has occurred), here’s what the zoning currently is as well as what they’re moving to. This is going to be a big time for the city of Raleigh and for Shaw if they do this right. More info on this can be found on their website here: https://www.theshawudistrict.com/

For anyone interested in seeing the rezoning vote and the few words from council members and MAB, it’s about 4hrs 20min into the video below

Since the two lots in front of Memandi Hall and Duke Energy Center for Performing Arts won’t be redeveloped any time soon, it would be great for the “Shaw University District” to house a mixed-use hotel and affordable housing development.

There is a somewhat recently completed development in Boston that consists of a 220 room Courtyard by Marriott hotel, 239 residential affordable apartments, below-grade 220 space parking deck, and ground floor retail and commercial space: The Beverly/Courtyard Marriott Boston Downtown/North Station - Bryant Associates

This type of development would be great for this area. It could potentially open the door for Shaw to have a partnership with an international hotel brand and create a popular hospitality program. Also, this type of development would help increase the amount of hotel rooms and the amount of affordable units downtown. To add, the hotel in Boston contributed funds to build the housing portion and is maintaining (or helping to maintain) said housing.

Gotta love that fair and balanced coverage where they have quotes from everyone opposed. Gonna build a highway though the middle of Shaw University while also erasing its history. I’m sure that’s exactly the plan Shaw has…

Need reminder - what is the meaning of “SH” in the designations on most of these plots?

Also, does anyone have a map showing the areas in which the university agreed to limit building heights to five stories?

I googled it, as a lay person I never know the acronyms. DX=downtown mixed use.

I think the number is the height in stories max allowed.

SH is the type of frontage.

-SH Frontage is for intended for areas where the highest level of walkability is desired. The -SH Frontage is intended to create a “main street” type of environment; therefore, mixed use buildings are the primary building type allowed. SH is on page 3-14 and 3-25.

Here is a link to my source.

I believe SH is short for Shop front. (or at least that how I read it)

You get what you pay for with WRAL.

As someone not very familiar with CRE, is it common to lease land to a developer as opposed to sell it? I’m sure there are pros and cons to lease vs sell.

A highway where?
On the one block of Blount St from South St to MLK?

Actually, it would be super convenient for me if they ran a highway from the corner of MLK and Wilmington to Person and South.

Further proving she’s not a boilerplate No on all things, rather more unpredictably case by case…
Those comp plan transition zones will remain an interesting battleground as the core morphs southward and branches out along BRT spines in the future…

Holy hell, they’re insufferable. I wish they’d leave the growing city they seem to have such disdain for.
