Show Off Things From Other Cities

Had a little trip out to the Aristotle distillery in Garner yesterday and saw this.

How shortsighted do you have to be to reject 100 condos and 30 townhomes in a new project in Clayton because of density and traffic? Fast forward two years from now and the same people will be complaining about house prices increasing too much.

Wow. Great job, Clayton. Historic housing crisis. More demand than supply, with equally historic migration from all over the damn country to this area. Big housing project proposed? Nah we donā€™t need it. Make it make sense.

Double make it make sense when you see the data. They were part of the fastest growing county in NC per the last census in 2020 Iā€™ll add too.

Wow. Thatā€™s a shame. Maybe we need to start a JoCo YIMBY movement to try and shake up the town council there too. Someone correct me if Iā€™m wrong, but Cary and Apex have (or are planning to) upzone and add some density around their downtown areas, right? That really needs to happen all across the board, from Fuquay to Clayton to Garner and beyond. So much potential for these to all be proper towns connected by public transit again instead of just sprawling traffic nightmares.

When I think of the Venn diagram of ā€œfuture focused urbanistsā€ and ā€œpeople who run for Clayton town council,ā€ Iā€™m picturing two circles on either end of a football field.

I donā€™t know about Cary, but I follow the Apex stuff more and I recently saw some more density proposed around the downtown area. For those familiar with the area, this proposal is going in across the street from TapStation. I think the downtown Apex area would be prime for some density/TOD when the S-Line becomes a reality. Especially when the hypothetical railroad station in downtown Apex is built.

When those people complain about housing prices theyā€™ll say itā€™s because of [insert urban or liberal boogie man], and not because of anything they did wrong. Cā€™est la vie. Life sucks then you die

These long held ā€œbeliefsā€ are just that, beliefs. Itā€™s very difficult to counter any belief system with data, as much as itā€™s difficult to change culture with data.

isnt there an amazon warehouse operational or nearly so on 40 inbetween clayton and garner? seems a bit of extra housing would be beneficial.

I thought this video was really informative about the choice to add BRT along the Van Ness Corridor in San Francisco and the impact after its implementation. As seen in the video, the streetscape is certainly an improvement. hope the successful implementation of BRT in SF and Raleigh helps make it a more attractive tool for other cities.

Garbage piling up and violent protests and strikes are fine. But not e-scooters!

In the Financial Times article about this topic, it also said the mayor and her transport head (who is from the Green party) do not approve of scooters because they are not environmentally friendly due to short battery life.

I love scooters, but there definitely needs to be a bit more regulation. Canā€™t tell you how many times Iā€™ve been on a sidewalk and thereā€™s just been a scooter completely blocking foot traffic or just taking up an insane % of the walkable space on the sidewalk.

Part of the solution would be to build bigger sidewalks, but thatā€™s not easy or possible on every single one. I wouldnā€™t be against having them placed in designated areas that are currently parking spaces.

Not everything needs to be done because itā€™s environmentally friendly. Personally, Iā€™m not biking over driving because I am trying to reduce my environmental impact. Iā€™m doing it because I enjoy it more.

Yeah, this feels like theyā€™re doing it because Parisians find them ugly and annoying, and the green aspect is a way to give everyone warm fuzzies about it.

Parisiens find everything ugly and annoying. They didnā€™t even like the Eiffel Tower for like a century LOL. I donā€™t think theyā€™re safe, and theyā€™re a bit of a hassle for everyone if theyā€™re left around poorly, but overall it can be a good way to go medium distances around a city. Would never think to try to drive a car, much less a scooter, though, in any European city. Chaos!
