Show Off Things From Other Cities

My birthplace!!! House of Guitars, Genesee Brewing, The adorable Seneca Park Zoo, and lots and lots of gun violence :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

This picture is actually from the roof of Genesee Brewery, which was pretty good beer.

We also stayed several nights in Webster for a wedding, which is a cool little town itself. I could see myself raising a family in a town like that. Small community and downtown, close to several outdoor activities, cool motocross track near by. But I’m sure the winters are another story.

You would be correct. Look up “lake effect snow” and you will see the kind of weather Rochester sometimes enjoys (and Buffalo is even worse on Lake Erie). I do not miss it.

Might as well start rooting for the Panthers with an attitude like that.

Correct - Niagara Falls on the US side is pretty run down and cheesy. Canada has kept up their side. I guess I haven’t seen all the cool things Buffalo has to offer - I went there to visit my grandparents every summer (NOT winter) growing up and don’t recall it being a place I would ever want to move to, though they lived in the surrounding suburbs. Seemed like a place people moved away from, but maybe that’s because my parents moved away from Buffalo to CT before I was born.

Back in February 2015 I was in Niagara Falls and got these pictures of the US and Canadian sides of the falls frozen over. Was kinda trippy as you could still hear the river humming along. Also very wild since I did the Maid of the Mist tour in the summer time as a kid too.

US side

Canada side

To continue hijacking this thread with upstate NY and SE Ontario cities…

A really nice tall building in Toronto, well done (and actually used) pocket park, and some nice examples of preserving and even incorporating existing architecture.

Excuse me? Buffalo is in Western NY. Upstate only exists in the minds of people from NYC.

One thing I’ll say about places that have long and brutal winters - their summers seem much more full of life, maybe because they’re shorter and everything blooms in full force all at once, with a short growing season for fruits/veg. I felt that way when in Maine in the summer too.

I went to Denver MeowWolf back in June. It was so, so, so, so cool. Honestly what I loved most of all was that room on the ground floor, off to the left of the main entrance, with the music.

I’d hate to break it to you but downstate NY does indeed control the cultural consciousness with regards to New York.

I grew up between Albany and Saratoga and have repeated that I’m from upstate NY my whole life because that’s what I grew up hearing. I’m always confused when I see it referencing Buffalo. That’s too far away. May as well be Canada.

Well for starters it’s been in the 70s every day, and that’s been amazing.

I went to Hobart & William Smith Colleges for undergrad, which is in (upstate) Geneva, NY, and while the summer and fall are amazing, those winters are just way too long IMO…

We would only have about a month and a half of nice weather in the spring semester before school finished for summer break. I wish I could have spent more time up there during the summer, because it is nice during those months; however, I had to come back to NC to see the fam, and unfortunately to melt…

If you guys ever get a chance, I would recommend visiting the vineyards around Lake Seneca, and the town of Ithaca – very beautiful!

What’s funny is in Rochester, we called it “upstate NY” too - even though we’re only 1 hour away from Buffalo aka “WESTERN NY” lmaooo. Syracuse (where my dad’s side is from) is “Central NY.” Buffalo people are funny (I should know, my mom’s entire family is from there/still lives there). The accent is almost midway between NY and Chicago, they’re f**king ANGRY all the time (hello @Phil!!) and the Bills are the #1 topic of conversation. And wings, and good pizza. I would argue that Buffalo pizza is even better than the traditional “NY Style” pizza (it’s cheesier and a little thicker - plus natural casing pepperoni always rules. Hello Bella!) - The Buffalo zoo was always fun as a kid, as was hitting the “beach” on Lake Erie and getting chased by seagulls. Downtown Buffalo kinda has a Brooklyn feel, it’s actually a lot cooler of a city than it gets credit for (just gotta know what to look for!) - also the legend RICK JAMES is buried in Forest Lawn cemetery.

Ok, you can have your Buffalo card back. Thought I would have to confiscate it after the lake effect snow comment. Yer alright Jake.

Agreed. This is the deadest part of DTD. Apartments all over with absolutely no retail. Closest retail is across the tracks or at the ballpark. And, at least the one on the right, is ugly as hell.
