Show Off Things From Other Cities

I found myself in Old East Durham not too long ago, thought it was pretty cool. Still seedy af but lively neighborhood. A lot of homes being renovated and townhomes popping up. Specifically, the intersection at Driver and Angier. Some pretty cool businesses having a go at it - Sofia’s, Ideal’s, Proximity, Mike D’s, etc…

As Cary runs out of land to annex and develop, infill is how the town reaches 200,000 residents.

Charlotte’s skyline is looking more and more like Atlanta’s skyline as the years pass by.

((((((((Charlotte’s skyline is already better IMO))))))))

ATL skyline

Side by side (ATL @ top and CHA @ bottom). Very similar with sprawling downtowns. I think Charlotte’s architecture is more unique, although you cant tell from this long range shot.

ha, that is what I was thinking, Charlotte is not that linear - which is one of the things l like about DTC. But with my old eyes, I figured it was an angle I’d never seen, lol.
I will add, if you haven’t been up the 85/75 connector of late, it have become an impressive canyon of towers out to the northern split. Now that I know to get all the way over in the left lane and just stay there I get to look at the buildings more when I roll through.

With Midtown and Downtown South future development, Raleigh’s skyline is going to be more similar & stretched out like Atlanta than Charlotte.

It got mentioned the other day, but I am in Birmingham, AL this week and took a walk through CityWalk. This park was a compromise between the City (who wanted to move the interstate out of town) and ALDOT (who didn’t want to pay to move it out of town). Of course, it would be preferable to have no interstate through the city, but they did a good job with what they had and integrating it with the rest of the city. It really helps with connectivity. It also isn’t noticeably loud underneath.

It is landscaped nicely with artwork spread throughout. The skatepark integrates really well.

It is right by Legacy Arena (multi use enclosed stadium) and Protective Stadium (football and soccer stadium).

It has several distinct sections.

And of course, pickleball. Though sadly it wasn’t being utilize when I was there. In Raleigh, these shaded courts would be packed.

Oh God…another city that uses “uptown”.

Well…that’ll teach me to NOT snag pics off the internet, even when I thought the references were legit! LOL. At any rate, I agree that Charlotte’s skyline has more character and diversity of architecture than Atlanta’s.

B’ham’s uptown is a new urban development that links that Arena and convention hotel with the stadium. It is just on the other side of the freeway from downtown proper. It is a nice convenience for conventioneers, a huge improvement from the days when that side of the freeway was basically empty. This rebuilt freeway is also so much more pedestrian friendly than the dark, loud, kind of scary sidewalks that linked the convention hotel with downtown proper. ALDOT did a remarkably good job.

I get it, but I’m  about the use of that term. So many cities use it.

I wonder if that, too, is on the demo list? If not, it needs to be.
