Show Off Things From Other Cities

Can you imagine the humidity this would add to the surrounding areas? And the mildew and mosquitos? And SHADOWS!!!???

Yes. Office park. Different angle.

That is a great capitol. Full on, hard core late 19th century exuberance. As I recall, situated on a hill above the river, with downtown across the river? Space in Raleigh would be much different if we had a state house this large.

Yes, the land slopes up to the capital making it even more predominant. Now to find the capital in Omaha. And a bar with more than 406 beers on tap.

Wrong town for Nebraska’s capitol friend.

Whoops. That’s why I’m driving across the country to learn this crap. Next stop: Lincoln. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

I really dislike Richmond skyline. I think Richmond is an Ugly city.

The skyline of Richmond is nice from a distance, but go to street level and it’s a different story. It isn’t a good pedestrian experience until you get out to the VCU area.

Sure the Fan is awesome but Shokoe Bottom is also a fabulous street level experience as are parts of Church Hill.

Shokhoe Bottom is way more interesting to me, but I don’t like having I-95 peering over it. Sure it’s cool to see from above as one whizzes by at 70mph, but it would be horrible to have it there if I actually lived in the district. This is an example of why I am glad that Raleigh doesn’t have a freeway plowing through it.

All my early memories of Richmond are driving through on 95 and seeing this:

We I spend time down town for a convention, I had a good time but the streetscape was disappointing. narrow sidewalks and a lot of man made wind tunnels, lol.

My girlfriend absolutely loves this clocktower. She was so excited to visit Richmond for the first time a couple years ago because all she knew of the city was driving past this on the highway.

One thing Richmond has done right: moving the Virgina State Penitentiary out of the downtown area in 1991.

Meanwhile in Raleigh: Central prison sits not only a stone’s throw from downtown but also directly across the street from Dix Park.

Staying off topic for the requisite interval. My first impression of Richmond was tainted by this abomination at Staples Mill Road (Not really in Richmond. But, it’s what Amtrak used for a time.)

Signature bridge getting underway in Miami. This bridge doesn’t cross water, rather it’s set to be an icon for Miami’s exploding downtown.

It doesn’t say how long or how much. Looks super cool though!

So this would really be a bridge to nowhere?

No. It’s not a bridge to nowhere. It’s just a bridge that’s part of an elevated freeway system that exists in downtown.

It’ll come in handy when they build the bathtub wall around the city after Greenland melts.
