Show Off Things From Other Cities

If people are interested in Miami development, I could update here pretty regularly. There’s truly a lot happening.

Here are some photos of how Miami Beach restores its historic Art Deco hotels while modernizing them for updated windstorm codes. The facades are literally the only thing that’s saved to attach to a new building that’s built inside of it. I’ve seen this several times over the years and the results are outstanding. You get a new building with its old facade and it’s nearly impossible to tell that anything has been done beyond replacing the windows to meet code.

That’s where they launch the space shuttles from, right?

They did an interesting facade preservation execution in Brooklyn with the Dominion Sugar Refinery - they kept the walls and did a glass structure inside the space:

That’s cool! It’s similar but completely different!
Here’s one that you can toggle through time and see the process unfold.

As usual, not to be outdone, the Town of Cary has its own thingie. I am not really sure what a Glow Parade is but I want to go.

The GLOW Parade is lighting up the night on its NEW DATE: February 1! Mark your calendars and get ready to be dazzled.

We kick off the night by gathering on Frantz Square Lawn at 6 p.m., and we’ll start our parade of lights ‘Under the Silver Moon’ at 6:15 p.m. The parade will be followed by music and performances featuring Bulltown Strutters, One Tribe Rhythms, and Caroleeena’s Circle of Joy.

Sounds like a cute little family oriented thing - perfect for Cary

It’s actually an EDM festival. You bring the molly, and I’ll bring the lasers.

Speaking of downtown Miami look what I saw (and purchased a drink from) a downtown DGX. I saw only one employee at the front and some stuff was behind the clear plastic protection. It is a shame it could not work out in downtown Raleigh. (and I would describe this area further away from most tourists areas) And there seems to be still one in downtown Wilmington on Water St.

I’ll be honest… having learned about Dollar General’s management practices and how little they think of their (usually sole) employee at any given location - I’m not upset in the slightest that they closed it down here. Dollar General can go right to hell as far as I’m concerned. Check out this breakdown - the “urban format” of DGX doesn’t change the fact that it’s the same company with these same practices:

That’s unfortunate for their staff, but downtown could probably still use some kind of small grocery store, and losing DGX is a loss.

Meanwhile in every single street corner in Poland…

Zabka Nano:

Zabka Robotic Hot Dog machine…okay this one it probably only one or two per city:

I think only Japan’s combini shops are better.

I wish Raleigh had a Polish hot dog robot… Lol

The woman in the first video isn’t converting to USD correctly. 4.20PLN isn’t $2. It’s more like $1. One of my favorite things about Poland as a tourist is how affordable it is.

SOME KIND OF small grocery store, absolutely - but just one not owned and operated by as scumbag of a company as DOLLAR GENERAL lmao

Just came across these renderings for a building that’s coming to Chicago. I’d love to have a modern brick building like this in our skyline someday.

Reminds me of buildings I saw in Barcelona. Unfortunately those are much higher tier cities than Raleigh, so we get plain brick walls :brick:

Would make a killer condo tower on the N&O lot…

As someone who lives close by and patroned the DGX often, I’m happy it’s gone. All my neighbors here have said the same. DGX attracted criminals and thieves. The district commander of downtown Raleigh said that they had over $150,000 in merchandise stolen last year. And, because of company policy, they were not staffed to deal with all the theft. I was essentially told that it was a monumental task for the police in downtown Raleigh to deal with, and they’d have to respond to multiple calls a day.

Oak City Meatball’s owner essentially told my neighbor that the entire reason he closed up shop was because of the issues stemming from DGX. I can understand why the average person might think that this was a loss for the community, but it wasn’t. They were awful neighbors and did absolutely nothing to mitigate the situation they created by inaction.

Now that they’re gone, it’s quite peaceful. I think you’d find it difficult to find any business or resident on that block that isn’t happy that DGX is gone.
