Well, that’s how I react to comments I find to be silly. Didn’t mean to trigger your delicate sensibilities. I will know better next time I respond to you.
I think I speak for the community when I say we’d prefer you guys take this to a PM. Pretty unnecessary and not exactly following forum guidelines around being respectful to other members.
I will second that. I’ve been pondering how to say exactly this for the last day.
@Phil @softfurrykitty Let’s bring it down a notch because it’s not that serious, we just need bike lanes separated from the street and better signage in some areas
I guess sometimes I forget how hyper focused this forum is on downtown. I would say traffic/transportation related issues in Raleigh as a whole are a massive problem.
I love how people prioritize this stuff - Covid 19 is going to kill us all and we need to destroy the world economy but the leading killer of our kids ages 5 to 19 (motor vehicle accidents) is “not that serious.”
That is a fair point. It is always amazing to me how we get use to some kind of deaths or dangers, while others that are often less deadly, become the center of our attention. No doubt everyone, every where needs to pay more attention to traffic & pedestrian safety.
I’d go so far as to say that pedestrian safety, especially for children, is more of an issue outside of downtown than it is downtown. Our auto-oriented development, beyond the Beltline in particular, is filled with massively wide city roads funneling people around at 45 mph. Pedestrian navigation of Glenwood, Creedmoor, Six Forks, Falls of Neuse, Capital, New Bern, Millbrook, Spring Forest, Tryon, South Wilmington, etc., is like being in a video game.
And then we have the arrogance to blame the victim when crosswalks are miles apart and sidewalks may or may not exist. Its a joke the terrible mess we’ve made of the human habitat.
If we have to have wide roads with many lanes, can we at least have boulevards with medians in them so that pedestrians have a safer place to be in the event that it takes two light cycles to cross these streets? I’d like to see more roads like Glenwood ITB. And, of course, I’d like to see more pedestrian crossings and sidewalks on both sides of the roads.
So, Qatar is getting a Stargate? Nice!
As I mentioned some time ago re: large stretches of Downtown Raleigh being lifeless, this seems to be common among cities that rely on a healthy influx of people from outside the downtown area (workers, tourists, etc.) to keep it vibrant. This was an article printed in the Houston Chronicle a few days ago: 'Downtown is dead:' How COVID turned Houston into a ghost town. Houston–a city 5x the size of Raleigh–is suffering from a dead Downtown, as well.
Keep saying if Raleigh invested is a modern Performing Arts Center including the surround area we would have a fighting chance at a lively downtown center. Instead that momentum went to Durham with their DPAC and ATC and Durham Bulls entertainment combo. DPAC’s majority audience is from Wake County for example.
Salisbury Square project will improve the area but it does not add any entertainment value at all.
Convention Centers only do so much and more for visitors than locals.
A little update, it’s got paint and such. Looks like glass is next. Excited about this since I’m at Bond Bros a lot… I still like that they moved a weird vaguely historic house down the street and completely changed its appearance.
