Followed by a short term rental, you can too article…Go Durm.
I’ll certainly take a ferris wheel any day for Raleigh. Skyview in Atlanta isn’t too bad. Maybe a nice observation tower would be a nice alternative.
There’s one at the state fair… If you’re brave enough
Amateur hour. Need a taller one.
We need a permanent one. Put it at Dix since it’s destined to be an attraction.
We need someone to put up a high quality activity park with a climbing wall, dive center, artificial surfing wave, indoor skydiving, artificial ski slope, and luxury bowling alley.
That would be so nice.
I’d be happy for an old bowling alley downtown
While I agree that Raleigh needs a centralized activity destination, I would alter your request in one way: a no frills bowling alley. Give me 20 lanes, shoddy shoes, a bunch of questionably clean bowling balls, and access to cheap beer - that would be a good bowling alley to visit, IMO.
ETA: I miss the days where a $20 bill could cover shoe rentals and at least 3 games.
Put up on Dix Hill to maximize the height and panorama one could see!
I’m not looking for a full on amusement park. I’m looking more like a Central Park/Golden Gate park thing.
I’d call for maybe another museum, water feature of some sort maybe a bigger lake or river with paddle boats, a couple of restaurants, food carts, and small retail vendors. Both Central Park and Golden Gate park have a zoo. Denver has one as well.
Interesting coincidence. @OakCityKarla and I stopped in at this place in Greensboro last night for a drink. They have maybe 10 lanes. Very cool vibe. I wouldn’t call it “no frills” but I’d be thrilled for one in DTR.
We use to have something like that on Hillsborough Street. Where the Target sits now was an old school bowling alley called The Alley.
I remember many times going there for cheap beers and bowling when I was at State.

Until I read your post, I saw the picture and was like, finally a bowl for me! Taco bowls, smoothie bowls, etc…
Yea, I have serious withdraw symptoms from the Alley being gone. AKA “Western Lanes” at one point too.
My wife’s previous company actually built that Target too, I wanted so bad to sabotage the project or even go inside before construction and take home some of the wood lanes or chairs, or shoes, or balls. But I wasn’t allowed…
From this photo is looks like that is bourbon flowing in the fountains!! I had to enlarge just make sure it wasn’t!!
Yeah it’s crazy how much has changed on Hillsborough street at such a breakneck speed.
If I told some current State student that I used to park in Valpark and went to PB’s on Thursdays, stumbled over to the Farmhouse, caught a great show at the Brewery, and did this all on Hillsborough street…they would look at me like I’m crazy.
This seems pretty on brand for the bowling discussion in Raleigh…think of the DTS possibilities…
The roadway that once tore Winston-Salem as I-40 in half was converted into a really fancy-lookin’ urban throughfare last year -so nice that, according to this N&O article, it’s now a finalist for America’s Transportation Awards!
One of the coolest parts of this redesigned road is its addition of pedestrian bridges like this one, which their designers claim is North Carolina’s first urban land bridge:
This looks more like a nicely-landscaped bridge to me than a true land bridge. Still, that doesn’t make it any less practical or important for Winston’s residents and their mobility needs.
More interestingly, though, there’s a nonprofit made specifically to invest in infrastructure and other community needs in Winston-Salem!
It turns out the Triangle has a similar group of community investors, too, under the name of the Triangle Community Foundation. It looks like they don’t manage things as directly, though, which might be why we’ve never seen that sort of investment in our part of the state. It would be cool if that changed, though!
I drove this stretch so many times when I was in school up at Boone - it looks much nicer, and with the bypass, a lot less congested. I don’t reckon they did anything about that wicked curve at Bowman-Grey hospital, lol. Nice job to all involved!
