Sites 2 & 3, Omni CC Hotel + Tower

Anything to avoid looking like Oklahoma City’s (or Mobile, AL for that matter) skyline would be appreciated.

You’d also have to consider, with all these projects that are looking at 40-story zoning, I’m sure a handful of them want to be the “tallest building” in downtown too. This being of developments we’re probably expecting to be constructed within the next 4 or 5 years, so Raleigh would be far more built up- at least more than OKC

Building off of the TBJ article that @GucciLittlePig posted in the Red Hat Amphitheater thread about expanding the convention center, it seems like the economic case for expanding the Raleigh Convention Center may be hard to make:

I wonder if this means we need to think more about why we want this expansion? I still think the expansion would be helpful for Raleigh and the Triangle. But instead of direct economic benefits, I think it’s more useful to think of it as an investment into our city’s identity, cultural capital, and the visibility of our local businesses. That would make this project more like how we think of investing in public transit for improving density, mobility, and social equity instead of solely obsessing over how to make more profit for the tax base.

Note: the first version of this post omitted the quoted sentence about the expert specifically presenting his finding to Austin’s Downtown Commission, which caused some of the confusion in the following posts. My bad, y’all.

If it’s hard to get conventions here, maybe we could host a presidential debate here or my beloved DNC or RNC here. Even if it’s hard those towers proposed should still go up regardless to accommodate folks beyond the size of the event.

Like you say, I think economic impact is important but not the end all in the decision. Within the economic umbrella, the article quoted how CC’s across the board operate net negative. What wasn’t referenced was the indirect income to the city and local businesses brought in via lodging, food, transportation, etc by the tourism influx.

On top of that the increased exposure to local businesses cant be overlooked. A larger convention center would bring in bigger names for events, improving Raleighs brand. I’m also pro expansion (as I’m sure aligns with the opinion of many in this forum) but am glad MAB is taking her time to decide her stance.

Dallas is often compared to Raleigh?

Funny enough, two of my closest friends that moved here from Mississippi were deciding between Dallas and Raleigh. Not sure how often that happens, but Raleigh won out.

Maybe the metro like Dallas-Forth Worth and Raleigh-Durham if the merger happens will definitely be compared to thrm.

I personally think this land should be used for other entertainment developments, or just leave it as is. This land could easily be used another way that will likely bring more revenue than RCC ever could. I mean, you could put a baseball stadium here… that would create far more revenue than an RCC expansion likely would, while also better benefiting our local businesses.

Sorry about that; I spliced out too much of the article in the name of defending against copyright claims. That paragraph was saying that Austin, not Dallas, is the city that’s “often compared to Raleigh”. The original post’s been edited to clarify this, too.

(Also… this shows that a disappointing number of people don’t read articles when people link to them in posts… so there’s that sobering fact.)

Well the TBJ is paywalled, so that’s a special case

Anyone have any idea what the latest is on this project?

We live right beside the Boylan Street Bridge.

Now that the crane’s up for Capital Square on South Street and it’s clear how that will enhance the view from the bridge, I can’t help but wonder how awesome this Hotel /Tower would look looming just behind there.

Thanks!

Small little encouraging piece I found in the recently released convention center expansion report. It looks like things have proceeded further than I expected considering they’ve already chosen the projects and have spoken to the developers.

The right side picture is the same as the original concept that city put out couple of years ago not what is going to be built- right?

Yeah, they’re probably going to release the design they like most at a later time
