Gotcha - but yeah, still a BIG DIG so it definitely may take some time before we see a crane base
Itâs also 100 degrees &âpretty sure if that crane falls on that guyâŚ.heâs dead with or without a hard hat.
Iâve worked with that type of rig a few times, they are pretty shaky (for lack of a better term). The well drilling rigs have a more substantial mast for pulling heavy auger strings or supporting 10 or 20 ft air rods (those things are HEAVY!!). The concern isnât the mast coming down, it is more of if a cable snaps, tooling slips unexpectedly, a bolt on the hoist breaks, or debris on drilling rods falls, etc. Aside from handing hazardous chemicals, drilling is the second most dangerous activity in environmental consulting. Iâve heard stories that would keep you up at night, and seen a few things that COULD have ended much worse than what actually happened. Bottom line, if you have a drill rig onsite, stay back way unless you have to be nearby (logging, sampling, etc).
Out of curiosity, what is the number one most dangerous? Something to do with mines or oil rigs, maybe?
Handling hazardous chemicals (pretty much daily) when in the field would be the most dangerous part. Knowing you are touching (with nitrile gloves) carcinogens on a daily basis isnât much fun. Thankfully my field work days are well behind me at this point.
The Omni Hotel hits the Design Review Commission at their Sept 4 meeting. It shows it all in the pdf here.
Lets break ground Raleigh!
Iâll let everyone else talk about the cool details here like the faux facade, but before we go on and do the usual debate over numbers that are easy to calculate, itâs 29 stories and 364â tall.
FINALLY SOMETHING IN THE 300-399ft RANGE!!!
This render does look a lil nicer (and taller) than the first one. Very cool!!!
Looks great. Will be transformative for Fayetteville and that portion of DTR
Lol I saw that and said the same thing ![]()
I forgot the market did go down a bit a few days ago! Jump!!
Donât tell any of my friends here in Charlotte but this new Omni in downtown Raleigh maybe the finest urban hotel in the state. It looks great!
Lets see you might have cranes at 4 spots downtown at once. The Creamery, the Omni, the City Hall and mysterious mid rise State Education bldg.
I have a feeling the City Hall tower will top out and that crane may be down by the time this Omni crane goes up - they have a LARGE dig to do and a TON of foundation concrete to pour before they can even think about going vertical. My bet is that we wonât see the Omni crane till next Spring at earliest.
I remember the downtown Raleigh alliance guy saying there was going to be some kind of info released at their event. Was this it I wonder?
The N&O article reported on possible future ideas for Dix Park/DTR connections based on yesterdayâs State of Downtown presentation. Interestingly, it started to stray into new construction in downtown proper, and it mentioned this:
This is new information, right?
The Topgolf or other simulation-type venue is new I believe. Topgolf doesnât really make any sense, but I could see something like Puttery working well.
