Smoky Hollow Phases 1, 2, and 3

They’re going to install a bollard in the middle and it’ll be a bicycle only entrance!

Good morning SmoHo!

Imagine if SmoHo really did bend around a curve like that!

@OakCityDylan and I met with Kane last week and implemented a few changes overnight.

Ah, so now it comes full-circle.

No, only about 1/4 circle. Lol.

We could go 'round and 'round about this, but I wanted to suggest this about the strip of land across from the Line.
This stretch, imho, really needs to become active to keep SmoHo from feeling like an inward-facing urban island. This is railway right of way, if expansion ever occurs, and it seems a natural for a station. We also talk here about the need for small and affordable retail/restur spaces to encourage entrepreneurship and uniqueness in DTR. I think all three goals could be accomplished along West St arches like these.

Rails supported by arches that are reasonable sized and priced. This could go in mass transit, but this page has taken a curve today.

I was envisioning a Raleigh version of Toronto’s Bentway.

Love this, and so nice to see people together

Miami is doing this as well with their underline, that will run under the elevated Metrorail.

This is a good use of the space - better then leaving it abandoned for sure - but having lived right up next to the Beltline, I can’t imagine anything peaceful about a freeway humming away while I was watching movie or trying to chillax.

It’s Friday so SmoHo picture time. Not a ton of visible change from here except for where you can see they have trashed the brand new paving job on the Johnson Street exit . The OCD in me is glad they have removed the construction debris from at least half of the roof on The Line Apts.

Street level is a different story. Phase One is really wrapping up for opening of the apartments. I will try to grab some street level pics this weekend.

Man that living wall is so lush! I feel like I’m standing next to a dense jungle, not a parking deck… :lion::tiger::bear:

I do like the decorative screens by the ramp/stairway. Haven’t gotten a chance to see what that looks like other than a blurry webcam.

Patience @GucciLittlePig. They planted jasmine so it will grow super fast (bad long term choice IMO).

You wanted Kudzu? :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

well that would definitely make a green wall. Ignore it for and in a few years just a big green mound. :rofl:kudzu covered building

not sure if kudzu but get the idea.

I mean, we had Kudzu Jesus…the only international attraction Raleigh ever had. Edit: this was the same year as the Barrel Monster and followed shortly by the Raleighwood sign in 2010. Some of the last and best creative sparks to be seen here.

Need to correct myself. After closer inspection today, they planted both Jasmine and creeping fig. Creeping fig is what you will see around north hills, Savannah, etc and is a better long term choice.

Really wish the Raleighwood sign would return. We need more quirky attractions like that.
