Is there an easy way to cross Western for access to the greenway from this neighborhood? Any location where you cross under and wouldn’t have to wait for a crosswalk signal?
If you walked towards Lake wheeler from this area, you would walk underneath Western Blvd and then there is an entrance to the green way trail on the right side. Would not have to wait for any lights.
Thanks a lot for that. As a follow up, any rough idea of how far you can run on that greenway without crossing a major street?
I live in this neighborhood and run around here often. 3 miles if you take Dorothea down to the sidewalk on the north side of Western. It turns into a greenway through campus. At the 3 mile mark you have to cross Hillsborough at the light, then many options from there, as far as not crossing streets goes. Going East has you cross maybe 1 or 2 major streets before you hit the Neuse River greenway system. It’s a pretty nice place to be as a runner, imo. I wish the greenways had water stations though
You can get 4 miles in going around Dix without looping too much. You just have to be wary of the people who work there in the morning. They have no concept of what a stop sign is.
I’m spoiled from the last 2 places I’ve lived where I can walk out my front door and have 5+ miles one way to run with minimal to no car competition. We’re scouting out a new place to live and this is a major priority.
I submitted my email address to learn more. Here’s a (not auto) response I got:
HI Dylan,
Thanks for taking time to send us your words of encouragement! We are excited to finally be able to share some of the attractive details of our up and coming development.
Please stay in touch and look for more information coming your way. We hope to be able to open our doors ealy this Fall. Let me know if you have any questions.
I inquired about activity on the lot and got a response:
We expect to start taking reservations and contracts in the early Fall of this year and if all goes as well as we are expecting, we hope to break ground by first of 2020. It’s a complicated building so completion date is most likely 12-18 months. It will definitely be worth the wait!
Hope this helps.
It’s a nice clean design and will be a great addition to the area. I wish they’d created a base somehow - maybe even with a tiny step-back or material change - even though there’s no retail? Much nicer for pedestrians.
I also got a unique response to my inquiry. Nothing worth reporting though.
And the left side…
Its hard to discuss what is major or not…you can run all the way to Umstead but have to cross Wade, run on Gorman, off the top of my head. None of that is a pain though. You can also run through Dix and pick up Walnut Creek Greenway and go to Lake Johnson (west) or to the Neuse River (east) near Anderson point park. I suggest looking over this (oops doxed myself)
Me and a buddy have been working out where water is (a bunch of us regularly are training for marathons and need to know so we don’t have to put on the hydro vests). He said he made a spreadsheet…if its a google doc I’ll post it. Also the the ‘grand loop’ in Umstead hits several water fountains and can make 20 miles or so if done right.
I won’t even run a route if there’s a possibility I have to stop for more than a couple seconds. That’s part of the reason I like Raleigh so much. Crabtree Greenway, Umstead, A combo of Umstead and Black Creek Greenway, Combo of Shelley Lake/Mine Creek/Crabtree, The Nuese, and the Tobacco Trail are all places I can get 6-12 miles without having to stop once for traffic or worrying about running along it.
I’ve never ran on the Rocky Branch, so I was curious how complete it was.
Some of us need the constant traffic breaks tho. (All my run clubs are in downtowns… )
There’s a tunnel at Wade (Meredith greenway) and I think Gorman is a large sidewalk the whole way. No getting around the Hillsborough St crossing though
Please and thanks. I plan many routes around the water fountains at Dix and Pullen
Turns out they don’t have it in a google doc but we are pulling together.
Walnut Creek Trail (just real quick): Lake Johnson, Eliza Pool Park near the old waterworks, Apollo Heights had one that was damaged but might be fixed now, Worthdale Park (fountain by the baseball field just off the greenway), Anderson Point (both sides by the shelters). Of course Chavis and Pullen if you don’t mind getting off the main greenway ribbon)
Mine Creek Trail: Shelly Lake boat house
I’ll edit this when they get back to me.
this is usually how I get to/from DTR from my House, Im further towards Tryon on lake wheeler rd.
A source connected to the structural engineering firm for this project said construction should start in the next couple of months.
