State Government

From a May 20, 2024 article from the News & Observer:

ARCHDALE BUILDING In the 2023 state budget, $11 million was allocated for demolition of the Archdale Building. The brutalist architecture building looks like a vertical PlayStation 2 gaming system and is the most prominent building drivers see when they arrive downtown driving south on Capital Boulevard.

Aw man. I mean, I get it, it’s so silly a building that tall has like two windows. But it’s a great looking building, especially at sunset.

It really reflects the setting sun nicely. I agree. My understanding is that the interior is pretty dated. If I recall correctly, I think this was included in McCrory’s Project Phoenix to revise the State’s holdings downtown.

The interior of the Archdale Building was bad during my internship in in 2001/2002, I can only imagine how it looks now.

While I certainly love it for its “so-ugly-it’s-cute” appearance, I wouldn’t mind its demolition if and only if a building of equal or greater height but with more MIXED USE were developed in its place. Otherwise, would rather not see it demo’d for a smaller, probably slightly more attractive, but equally single-use building take its place.

Yeah, that’s probably the one thing that irks me about tearing it down—it’s the only state building that’s more than 12 stories. I agree if it’s gonna be replaced, then replace it with something bigger.

It’s a great location for a signature tower for the city. If it’s demolished, it needs to be replaced with something taller. Preferably, something other than a square pedestal building.

We don’t get a say. This is being done by the state government, who decided they don’t have to listen to us.

Maybe we can upgrade to one that looks like a PS5.

 I’d take that over what’s there now.

If it’s replaced, how uninspiring do you think it would be?

Can we get some ventilation holes (aka windows) on the sides for this one?

I’m gonna miss the Playstation. It’s a good kind of ugly. Every proper city should have some buildings like that. It builds character.

Are there actually plans to get rid of it or is this more just forum discussion that it’ll likely be replaced at some point?

It’s a goner. From a May 20, 2024 article from the News & Observer:

Hah! Those giant phone switching equipment towers in NYC are cool. Raleigh has a much smaller version on Nash Square.

i think it was on us 421 or us 74 near siler city…this rest stop if I recall had a ‘garden ceiling’ with butterfly attractant plants. it was really neat. the green plaza downtown might be a good spot for some of the state employees to chill at lunch.
