From a May 20, 2024 article from the News & Observer:
ARCHDALE BUILDING In the 2023 state budget, $11 million was allocated for demolition of the Archdale Building. The brutalist architecture building looks like a vertical PlayStation 2 gaming system and is the most prominent building drivers see when they arrive downtown driving south on Capital Boulevard.
It really reflects the setting sun nicely. I agree. My understanding is that the interior is pretty dated. If I recall correctly, I think this was included in McCroryâs Project Phoenix to revise the Stateâs holdings downtown.
While I certainly love it for its âso-ugly-itâs-cuteâ appearance, I wouldnât mind its demolition if and only if a building of equal or greater height but with more MIXED USE were developed in its place. Otherwise, would rather not see it demoâd for a smaller, probably slightly more attractive, but equally single-use building take its place.
Yeah, thatâs probably the one thing that irks me about tearing it downâitâs the only state building thatâs more than 12 stories. I agree if itâs gonna be replaced, then replace it with something bigger.
Itâs a great location for a signature tower for the city. If itâs demolished, it needs to be replaced with something taller. Preferably, something other than a square pedestal building.
Itâs a goner. From a May 20, 2024 article from the News & Observer:

i think it was on us 421 or us 74 near siler cityâŚthis rest stop if I recall had a âgarden ceilingâ with butterfly attractant plants. it was really neat. the green plaza downtown might be a good spot for some of the state employees to chill at lunch.
