State Government

Has anyone noticed that all the grass at the capitol building has been killed off? Any idea what they’re doing there? I’ll try and get a pic later.

Yeah, it looks like they are replanting it.

Per this article they were targeting that area for a parking deck. No other info I’ve seen. Legislative Services Office’s reign of terror in secret continues apace

What in gods name would they need another parking deck for?!

The article vaguely alludes to plans to develop the surface parking lots on the block south of the Governor’s mansion. So, presumably that.

The ramp is all but gone now.

I don’t have a drone, but here are some shots of the latest. The highest point for photos was from the cafe terrace at the natural science museum.

Since they’re stupidly, shortsightedly, and anti-urbanismly refusing to include any leasable ground-floor retail space, the best brightside I can think of is that this will bring a ton of state employees to work directly across from the Museum Cafe and hopefully increase their regular customer base. I’ve eaten there a few times and it is SHOCKINGLY good for a museum eatery.

It’s really easy to imagine some more synergies in the general area as well. With the museum on one side of the street, the education campus opposite of it, and a possible partial restoration of the former Caswell Square once the community college folks move into the new campus, it’s interesting to consider some outdoor “laboratory” space for school kids in nature. Imagine the museum being able to curate outdoor experiences for learning and have some building resources available to them as well. Of course, and with our current legislators, I am not so certain that actual science and learning is going to be a priority.

The whole area just NEEDS more pedestrian/street level activation in general. Why bother further developing your gov’t district in a growing capitol city and not put ANY priority on making it all walkable and benefitting of all citizens? Makes zero sense to me.

FYI there’s a thread for this project already.

Sad, but the next Hunt generation now occupies the Lt Governor’s office. I’m sure that he was proud of that legacy.

Progress on the small construction site next to 413 N Salisbury, apparently it’s for DOA. But I don’t understand why they have loading dock doors so high up…

I think that’s the chiller plant for the downtown chilled water loop. Those are bays are likely for the chillers located on the 2nd floor to be replaced/repaired.

This must be the plant connected to the massive tank under the plaza in front of History and Nat Sci. At the time, it was the deepest hole ever dug in Raleigh. I expect it still holds that record. At the time, it was promoted as a way to use the earth to keep the water at a steady temperature, a cost savings.

Oh yeah rolled by here today and just illegally parked like a local LOL to get some photos. Looking good and a tall 8 stories any higher or is that it? I was told about 8 floors above ground so maybe my source was right.

I thought that there is a six story section too.

Appears to be 2-3 floors per vertical beam. If they throw up more vertical beams at the top then it will possibly be taller than we predicted.

It won’t be. It’s already topped out. 8 stories above the concrete level(s), plus the mechanical penthouse.

Alan is right that there’s supposed to be an L-shaped section coming on the left (as viewed from the museum). I’m a little confused how that is happening with the weird ~5 foot height disparity between the top of the base of the building and the top of the adjacent concrete “plaza.”

Also, there’s a thread this should be moved to:
