Are they ever going to build these condos as well? I remember seeing these proposed back in the day. Would be on the other side of Garden Place and opposite of the new development posted above. FWIW they list The Lynde as one of their other projects so I’m not holding my breathe here

that seems a small number of drive thrus. people in vehicle (orkin) and delivery jobs might like the drive thru. i used them enough.

Nope people are on the rush they got no time to be waiting inside that’s what drive through safe for.

Raleigh’s got the best dirt.

I don’t care. They can do curbside or plan their time better.

Funny thing is, I usually find that drive-throughs are actually slower than just walking up to the counter at least 75% of the time, especially now that mobile ordering is so common. I usually take note of who is last in line when I park, then check where they are when I leave. Today I watched a state trooper only get halfway through the line before I exited the building.

Drive-throughs suck, particularly in cities. Terrible for the environment, awful for traffic, and a miserable experience for staff (especially since a lot of chains are following Chick-fil-a’s lead and forcing these kids to stand outside in the heat to speed up the ordering process).

Either plan your day better or just be more patient. Drive-throughs really don’t save you much time, they just make car use a little more convenient for everyone who drives (and the street experience a little more miserable for everyone who doesn’t).

You’re right. In most cases - drive thrus are only about the person in their climate controlled box, not wanting to leave it, not wanting to factor that there’s a better, more efficient and more environmentally responsible way to go about sustenance…and they don’t care and the establishments that cater to them don’t either. Humanity is a paradox and profiting off of the majority of us reveals the brutal tragic logic of profiting from the me, me, me mindset…

Drive through are for the lazy. It does not save time.

I used to never do drive throughs, even to-go orders I would park an go inside. Until kids came along. Drive throughs are much faster with little kids you don’t have to heard in and out of cars. They finally got old enough not to need to do that anymore, and then Covid hit…

I used to love to hit the drive through after running a marathon, it was a nice reward after running all that way, I didn’t want to go inside as I could hardly hole dat ass up.

Whatever, not everybody has a phone to mobile order. You can force people to plan there day early that called a dictatorship

The built environment is constantly forcing us to plan our day. By your logic, there should be a grade-separated highway straight from your front door step to your school or work that only you are allowed to drive on. That way, you don’t have to plan your day around the possibility of stop lights or traffic, and you’re guaranteed to always get there at the exact same time. But it wouldn’t make any sense to build something like that, would it? So instead, you leave a bit earlier in anticipation that your commute could take a few extra minutes if you encounter some kind of obstacle. People do this every day; it’s just the nature of how the world works.

Cities with high transit ridership have made particular planning decisions that lead people to favor public transportation. Without exception, these decisions include making driving a little less convenient. NYC has high transit ridership because it’s way easier to take the subway than it is to drive. We can’t plow a tram down Hillsborough Street if that tram is going to just sit in traffic with the rest of the cars. Why would anyone prefer to ride that when they can drive and get to their destination in the same amount of time or less? (The DC Streetcar on H Street is a really good example of this, by the way.)

You cannot simultaneously prioritize cars and transit. It does not work. One has to suffer. In nearly every North American city, it is transit that suffers. Policies like parking maximums, bus and bike lanes, transit signal priority, pedestrian malls, and yes, even drive-through bans work because they take priority away from cars. Every single city that’s tried to have it both ways (Los Angeles, Atlanta, Dallas, Phoenix, Baltimore, Pittsburgh) has failed to get even a quarter of their population to use transit regularly.

The tides are just now starting to shift in Raleigh, but we have a long, long way to go before transit is a viable option for most people here, let alone the most convenient option. We’re only going to get there if we continue making decisions that prioritize people over cars. And people — who are quite adaptable, I might add — will make adjustments that best suit them.
