When I walk to the Village District, I always take Johnson St. from N. Boylan to Smallwood or Bellwood. Not only is it a more pleasant walk, it’s also flatter because it follows the creek bed all the way to the shopping center.
Does anyone know what’s taking the Oberlin Rd Streetscape project so long? https://raleighnc.gov/home/content/PWksDesignConst/Articles/OberlinRoadStreetScape.html It seems like it’d be a really helpful upgrade for a road that sees too many cars and a lot of pedestrians. Got approved by city council in 2015 (?!!) but still no construction start date.
The city only received one bid on the project and it was ~$150k over estimated costs. The project will be rebid soon and it may include additional pavement resurfacing on Oberlin that was not part of the original project. The hope is that combining this work will lead to higher number of bids that are more competitive.
Agree. Peace street is one ugly road. Streetscaping would do wonders for Smokey hollow / seabird station areas.
If I’m remembering correctly, the streetscape plan was supposed to run from St. Mary’s on the west to Capital on the east. I could be wrong since isn’t been more than a decade since it was “approved”.
I assumed it was bc so much private development was doing most of the work with sidewalks etc
Saunders is beyond repair but Wilmington is basically a blank slate and has some of the best views of Downtown. The walk could be great if we develop responsibly.
In your grandkids lifetime possibly. I don’t see that street becoming anything near pleasantly walkable for decades.
I’ll give you credit, your personal brand is impressively consistent.
I believe the prior plan had a center turn lane, and non separated bike lanes, which I have come around to think are useless, so I hope they redesign it before moving forward.
You aren’t even capable of having a pleasant walk through Moore Square so not sure I can give your assessment much credibility.
You know, this world would be a lot more pleasant if people were able to look beyond their own lifetimes when making decisions. Sure, when I walk my dog down Wilmington today he’s munching on discarded nick bags the entire stretch but if my grandkids can have a better experience then it would be worth sticking around and trying to build a better neighborhood.
For the price of these condos, it’s a rather pedestrian design, but what’s new?
How dare you use “pedestrian” as a pejorative!!! Ban him for life!
Just stating the obvious. Wilmington, Saunders, New Bern, Capital, unattractive, harsh pedestrian experiences in their current form. In my opinion the current form is so bad it will take decades to change it. Nothing has really changed along these corridors to improve the attractiveness and/or walkability during the last 20 boom years, so I have zero confidence that it will change much the next 20.
They are literally about to redo New Bern as part of the BRT project.
Any updates on the hotel on Smallwood and Woodburn?
At an intersection like that, I hope it at least has a creative name…
Be careful in the intersection so you don’t get T-boned.
