Village District Developments

The designer/architect needs to be fired ASAP

Bruh, architects work at the bidding of clients and the balance of cost versus desired design is a sad, sad reality for most folks to come to grips with…

Also, news alert, architects aren’t licensed based on their ability to make something pretty.

No doubt…and many clients aren’t willing to pay for quality much less uniqueness of design

It does seem like a bit of a waste for such an arresting site.

Cameron Village is apparently being renamed, per the News & Observer.

It will be called Village District, dropping its connection to the Cameron family, whose wealthy patriarch was one of the largest holder of enslaved people in North Carolina before the Civil War.

“Reintroducing this destination as Village District aligns with the collective values of our neighbors, patrons, and merchants,” Chris Widmayer, Regency’s vice president of investments said in a release Thursday. “Recently,Village District has seen exciting changes including the planned addition of rooftop space at The Overlook, murals that have engaged the community, the addition of strong local merchants, and strong national brands such as Sephora. These enhancements will ensure that Village District is a destination for the area for the next 70 years.”

Haha beat me to it by 1 minute!

I’m sure some will scream cancel culture/PC overkill. I don’t really care one way or the other, but I feel like it’ll be another Midtown/North Hills situation where no one except marketing materials actually uses the new name for a decade or more.

Yep I think it’s the correct decision to re-name it, but I doubt anyone will change how they refer to it, and many will double down on the Cameron Village name to “own the libs” or whatever.

It is the right move, I think, but I hope they continue in their quest to “align with the collective values of their neighbors” by shifting to a denser mixed-use model that makes that area a bit more affordable… but I don’t anticipate anything like that anytime soon.

I also find it funny that they could’ve EASILY re-named it “Oberlin Village” in tribute to the freedman’s neighborhood that was founded post-Civil War basically a block down the street… and fka Cameron Village is even right there on Oberlin Rd. This could’ve been a huge home run, but instead they go with the laughably generic “Village District”??? YAWN.

That would’ve been a great idea!.. :sob:

What are the odds they knew about that history, though? I didn’t know that about Oberlin’s history until just now (though WRAL had an article about it last year), and I’m more of a Triangle local than the Florida-based company that owns that place.

EDIT: It looks like the name “Oberlin Village” is already taken by the local historical education association. Maybe that played into this decision, too.

That would have been a terrible move and overshadowed the actual Oberlin Village area. It would have basically taken the name away from that area.

Agreed. I have serious concerns about the political ideology produced by critical theory known as cancel culture, but in general think it’s fine to rename Cameron village as a shopping center. I just wish they’d come up with a better name not a worse one…

Nice view from the “former Cameron Village”:

I’m confused what happened?

Smoking Holler sure lessens the impact of Broughton’s tower from this perspective.

I would love to see the owners of this area to redevelop it by adding 1 additional floor or retail for each building and condos on top and add pedestrian breezeways

Woooof…never let there be discussion of the urbanity of the Village until something from this pic changes
