Will We Have a Big Snow Event Jan 2026

So I’m seeing so much hedging going on for this winter storm maybe no winter storm? Will it be epic? Or not. I thought this might be a fun topic. And a place to post some photos should “the big one “ actually happen!!

I would be awesome if we could get a 2 day snow storm. It’s been awhile since we had a good one.

Snow, or sleet, or freezing rain, or all of the above.

We’re overdue for a big one and the Old Farmer’s Almanac predicted a cold snowy winter so… I’m guessing it’ll be rain like the last one because we can’t have nice things.

If nice things is just ice, then we don’t want nice things. If it’s snow, that’s a completely different story.

The bar for a “big” storm was set for me in college. January 2000 we got 20 +/- inches of snow. That was epic!! We’ll see what happens this weekend. I do have plenty of wood if the snow is really ice and the power goes out. :electric_plug: :low_battery: :flashlight:

They are calling for ice here in my part of Alabama - lets hope that changes. I have a gas cook top, but the chimney sweep said not to use our fireplace, there are cracks in the flue…. And why is this happening on a weekend? Can we not get a good winter storm on a weekday?

I look forward to everyone’s photos!! Always, even if you don’t get snow.

I was living at the Cotton Mill back then and we were iced in for days. Capital Blvd was clear, but it was a “ski-jump slope” down to it and nobody could even make it the boulevard. After several days, a bunch of residents got out there with anything and everything we had to break it up including hammers and cookie sheets.

Thank god they’ve invented sand and salt trucks since then. Now if only the city would use them, instead of brining the roads 2 days before it rains. I love how what is a weekly occurrence everywhere else I’ve lived is apocalyptic here. Agree with Paul though, what a waste to not have this during the week! LOL

Ironically, and at that time, the city had its road salt barn directly across the street at the future Smoky Hollow Park. The city had no obligation though for our parking lot and driveway.

The 2000 snowfall was very disruptive, but there was a sleet storm in the early 1990s that dropped a few inches of sleet… which promptly solidified into a layer of ice that snowplows could not touch. The ice lingered for about 10 days.

If I recall correctly, in 2000 the city had to bring in snow plows from as far as Maryland to clear the major streets that were not maintained by NCDOT. The city never did plow the residential sidestreets.

Bear in mind that NCDOT not the city is responsible for many of the main roads, e.g. Creedmoor and Capital.

This happened in the 2000 storm as well. It still looked like snow for days, but the Sun melted the snow and it instantly refroze into a giant, thick, sheet of ice.

Yep, that 20” snow was awesome, mainly because it was snow and not ice.
