Will We Have a Big Snow Event Jan 2026

Sleet is far less likely to accumulate on aerial power lines than freezing rain, and a prolonged power outage is the major risk. Many neighborhoods in Raleigh don’t have natural gas, and in the ones that do it’s usually a forced air system in which the blower is electrically driven. As cold as it will be, being stuck in a dark cold house because the streets are impassible is a serious issue for families with small children or geriatrics.

And tomorrow we will have another forecast. It’s Raleigh after all.

Suburban Charlotte east of the city all sleet so far. Sleet so much better than freezing rain which may still get.

The main event, freezing rain, is still to come. The Sunday 8 am forecast has freezing rain starting around 5 pm and continuing until 4 am Monday. Accumulation of 0.2 to 0.5 inches on top of the mixed snow and sleet that’s already fallen.

0.2 inches would cause only isolated power outages. 0.5 inches is getting into the danger zone.

quiet streets, saw more people walking than driving

So, any reports of downed trees/limbs or mass loss of power anywhere?

I think we got lucky with this one. Mostly sleet here. A few thousand without power but not bad. Nashville got hit with the freezing rain much harder and has 300,000 without power.

Numerous power outages from Hendersonville to upper SC, but not that many in the big picture of things. I don’t mind being stuck in my home. I don’t want to be stuck in a cold home.

We started this weekend’s storm forecast 12” of snow. and received this inch. Never bet the farm on snow between the Atlantic and the Blue Ridge.

Okay a Nor’easter may develop off SC coast this weekend and the local expert in Charlotte Brad Panovich says it will be all snow this time IF we get any in Charlotte. But I saw a chart today that said hold on to your hats Raleigh is in 12-24 inch range! Now our local guy Brad says you can’t talk about how much at this point but some of these models are running crazy. Anyway Raleigh BOLO for snow this weekend. Raleigh is much closer to the coast than we are down here in Charlotte.

It’s gonna be a dusting if that and everyone is gonna panic buy groceries like it’s the zombie apocalypse. This state is so soft.

Lighten up! I don’t think there’s anything soft about the mountain residents who survived Helene, residents of the coastal plain who have seen a third of it under water after hurricanes, or the natives on the Outer Banks who’ve been through more storms than the residents of Raleigh can count. Maybe it’s just the urban and suburban Piedmont that’s soft.

I didn’t run to the grocery store last week, but I have neighbors with medical problems and mobility limitations. Those folks are vulnerable if the power goes off for days on end (it has happened) or they can’t get out of their homes for a week.

I meant about the bit of ice or the threat of a little snow in the Triangle. Wasn’t talking about Helene..sorry if you took it that way. Maybe you should lighten up.

is that saying 34 inches of snow alone the state line? Nearly 27 in Wake?

y’all … I am driving up there, it just supposed to be bitterly cold here in ‘bama

Our local guys are saying 2-4 inches maybe in Charlotte but 2 feet from that graphic above is some model gone awry. Listen to your local people or least someone in NC like Brad Panovich. As this will be snow should not be any or very few power outages. However traffic will be affected of course. Glenwood Ave up the hill I am looking at you or Wade Ave coming into town from I-440.

I am sure people are still drinking their milk and eating their bread from last week.

From the top weatherman in Charlotte:

Here’s a look at the setup for the weekend, not quite ready for a snow map yet. Don’t buy into all the crazy model outputs or apps. There are many factors that could lead to less snow or a whole lot more, but there’s just too much uncertainty on totals and locations right now. Here’s a look at the probabilities for snow and at least something right now, not nothing, and no mix or rain.”

As long as it’s not ice I am good. I like snow.
