I am not sure that battle will ever end either!
My take on it is simple. If you are going to build transit or walking oriented housing, build it in the city or put it at a transit station location. If are going to build low-rise and car oriented housing, put it in the suburbs.
Chinese big city density is dystopian. Trust me it sucks.
That my friend we can agree on
Well, environmental laws for sure…
However, less density in the USA means more cars, and more cars has meant more pollution. At the end of the day, more density doesn’t automatically equate to more pollution.
Not sure if that is particularly true. We have a lot more cars now in the US than in the 70’s and yet pollution has dropped dramatically since the passage of the Clear Air Act in 1970.
The true super dense mega cities are polluted by everything. Mopeds, cars, factories, sewage. Goes back to the beginning of time before cars. Look at 19th century Europe. Fine line between density and reduced quality of life.
I believe that is why @John started with “Well, environmental laws for sure…”

A few of us in Raleigh and surrounding areas attended the Strong Towns National Gathering a few weeks ago and after meeting each other and discussing, have decided to start a local conversation here. If anyone is interested in joining us, we have a Slack here! Slack
From the ST website:
A Local Conversation is a group of people in a particular place who meet to talk about the Strong Towns approach and then put it into action where they live.
This is likely going to be a more agenda-focused group compared to the DTRaleigh Meetups. I’m putting it in this thread since density is pretty important to Strong Towns, but @dtraleigh feel free to move it if it fits better somewhere else!

The Planning and Development department is seeking community leaders for the Rezoning Community Connector program. The department is specifically looking to fill openings for districts B, C, and D. The Rezoning Community Connector program increases public engagement with the rezoning process. Community Connectors will attend neighborhood meetings. They will also gather information from residents on issues that are important to the community.

WHOA who is the Lex Luthor/Jeff Bezos fellow on the left in that picture?
This is a terrific and holistic video about how we got to where we are regarding our cities and transportation network built around the car & exclusion.
So funny, I just watched this video over the weekend and thought of sharing it on this forum! I’ve been enjoying her videos lately.
The algorithm is strong!
Enjoyed it a lot- very insightful.
Hi all!
Leo, I’m not going to ask that we create a temporary thread here - just going to put it out here once.

Not sure if this is the right place, but please for give me. I just stumbled across this and was appalled at the idea of a 4 lane drive through. I think we have come a long way from our preauto modes of transportation (primarily walking) and building to the “people scale” to this monstrosity or the Buckee’s stations starting to pop up on the East Coast. When are we as a society going to wake up and say… enough already, this is too much?
All the
s rejoice…
We’re soooo doomed in this idiocracy,.
I’m not crying, I’m laughing. Really. Yeah.No…
