From the blog, I didn’t realize there was buildings on this lot as recently as 2007. Does anyone have pics of what was there before the parking lot?

Great picture! My thanks! :hugs:

Funny, that crane doesn’t look so tall now…?

You can go to Imaps and they have aerial photography going back to 1981. This is 1988.

You have to go way back but I do have photos of the site from 2007.

Ya, that one was rough on the eyes.

The building spanning the block north to south was a motor lodge I think. Goodnight Raleigh had a picture a while back I think.Yep, found it. The Downtowner Motor Inn.

Yeah me too. I moved back to Raleigh in 2007 and drove thru downtown quite a bit since then. Had been away for about 3 years, but didn’t really spend much time downtown even then since the late 90s.

I moved to Raleigh in 1969 and drove along Hillsborough St often but for some reason just do not recall the Downtowner while I do recall the Holiday Inn . I also recall the building along Dawson after seeing the picture. Guess they both were removed while I was living outside Raleigh and just got use to not seeing them, or many they just were not worth seeing LOL.

The Real Estate project manager for the Fallon Company just posted a drone photo of the progress.

He then answered some questions in the comments. Early winter 2021 completion date,
Phase 2 should start in 12-18 months

That’s interesting they had previously been saying that phase 2 would start very soon.

Yes. That’s a major bummer that they’re saying over a year to a year and half before even starting the residential portions. TBJ had quoted them saying 1H 2020.

I noticed the current status of the project only takes up about half of the block, whereas the proposal shows the entire block being filled. Will the brick house and adjoining buildings be destroyed as part of the next phases?

Personally I think they are making a mistake by delaying it. FNB obviously just delivered it’s units and Smokey hollow has 700 opening this year but other than that there arnt any big rental projects under construction in DTR if these were to open in a year and a half or so I think they would be the only thing coming online. Especially since the time line for nexus is now extended.
