400 Hillsborough Tower

It was independent, not open very long, and I seem to recall that they had a hard time with stocking appropriately.

There was a piggly wiggly there, yikes.

Yeah I even found an article or two mentioning it.

It’s always been this weird place for me because I read about it opening before I moved down, and it closed before I could see it in person.

As someone who did try to shop there, they ran a pretty crappy business. I think that their intentions were good, they just weren’t very good at it.
Also, their prices weren’t competitive if I remember correctly.
It didn’t last all that long either: like a flash in a pan.

I can vouch for all of this. They did try, but it was a lot different environment back then. And being tucked away behind things didn’t help.

True. Being tucked away didn’t help. There wasn’t a very large walkshed of customers.

Why all the talk about Piggy-wiggly that was in Seaboard station on the 400 Hillsborough board? The building that pictures showing is what I remember as being Southeaster Electronics not a grocery store. I bought a lot of electronic parts for cables and such there in early 80’s. Never recall any type of grocery store there.

The Piggly Wiggly wasn’t in Seaboard Station, that was Capital City Grocery. The building at 401 Hillsborough was several things, including a Piggly Wiggly at one point, I believe. Let me try to find the article I saw.

Just loving all the different eras of architecture captured here.

I believe 400 was actually an A&P before the pig.

Lol damn you beat me to it! We have spent the last 20 minutes trying to figure this out, and I realized I meant A&P! Good work!

Just to add, from the same post that @GucciLittlePig found, OldeRaleigh says “the end is nigh for the old A&P…work will begin soon” as posted on May 16, 2019. Little did they know it would be over 2 years later before work actually began…

sorry got confused PW AP. It’s my understanding, which may be wrong. PW retreated south and Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company retreated north. Are either of them still around today.

The Pig is, but its down to the mid South. I don’t ever recall a Pig in Raleigh, but was a regular at the A&P across from campus. Their coffee grinder always fascinated me as a kid. Bonus trivia, the Pig was the first self-serve market. Started in Memphis.

There are definitely still Piggly Wiggly’s around. I think generally in rural areas. Are you Big on the Pig?

There’s a lot of Piggly Wiggly’s still in NC, but usually in rural areas. A&P went out of business in 2015.

The one closest to me closed! I didn’t even get a shirt!!

Definitely a rural thing. I drove past at least two of them this evening!

Yeah A&P and its other banners (Waldbaum’s, Super Fresh) held out in the NYC and Philly suburbs until a few years ago. I think most of the locations are now Acme.

There was an A&P in Greystone shopping center on Lead Mine Rd when I was a kid. It changed to Farmer Jack’s in the 90s and is now a Food Lion.

I worked at Farmer Jack’s for all 90 seconds it existed.
