400 Hillsborough Tower

asking the important questions here

What about World of Beer. With Fayetteville and Greensboro franchises.

Used to be at NHillsā€¦better late than never meowā€¦

Yeah, if they couldnā€™t make it in North Hills, they obviously canā€™t make it here. I used to go there once a month maybe when I lived over that way. No issues with them, sad they didnā€™t stay open, but I hadnā€™t been in years. I doubt theyā€™d just try again 5 miles down the road.

Is North Hills really where the craft beer nerd crowd hangs out? Vita Vite (in its more sleekly generic space than downtown) and Yardhouse definitely feels like the more natural fit there.

Downtown is where the craft beer nerds hang out but thatā€™s the thingā€¦ thereā€™s more competition. A craft beer shop in North Hills doesnā€™t have to deal with Burial, Bhavana, and Trophy being right nextdoor, along with a dozen other bars and any new things that constantly open. Thereā€™s a niche for a taproom in North Hills that would have convenient access to a large population in North Raleigh.

I didnā€™t think of World of Beer as really targeting only ā€œbeer nerdsā€ as much as just people who like beer that isnā€™t just Bud Light. Itā€™s a chain with a good selection of beer. If anything, the lack of food to munch on or anything to really do maybe was the flaw for me. That, and the competition from everything else nearby now.

As a beer drinker and preference to local beers (regardless of where I am), Iā€™d consider Yardhouseā€™s selection over World of Beer, perhaps because Iā€™ve not really been to WoB all that much and Yardhouse has food.

In regards to breweries spreading out, Iā€™m not sure I agree with that ā€œstrategyā€. Perhaps that isnā€™t the intended strategy anyway, but consider what the South Slope is to Asheville and what it could be if we had a brewery district. The more breweries you have concentrated in an area, the more of an attraction it becomes vs a single visit to a single brewery. If we had a half-dozen breweries inside the Sipā€™n Stroll district (btw, thatā€™s likely to be expanded soon per :bird:), that would be an attraction in and of itself.

:beers:

ps, whoops on the topic sprawlā€¦put one of the breweries in 400H!!!

Wake Forest Rd area isnā€™t too far and Iā€™ve gotta think they take most of that crowd. Funguys, Nickelpoint, Lynwood, Neuse River, Sneaky Penguin, Ancillary Fermentation, soon to be Ponysaurus, House of Hops all within a 10 minute drive.

WOB was fine but the selection at a local bottle shop like State of Beer, Vault, House of Hops blew it out of the water. Always found it weird how little local stuff WOB got, but probably more due to the corporate-ness of it.

Really hoping for a brewery on this side of downtown! Connect it to Crank Arm and Burial with the sip n stroll and thatā€™d be the start of making our breweries actually walkable, like Asheville and Durham, and even Wilmington.

Is that just a dream or is there actually a ground floor spot in 400H that could handle a taproom?

Great question. I was just sneakily pulling the topic back to the thread. Iā€™m not sure what requirements a brewery has outside of size and if that would differ from requirements a restaurant would have.

Weā€™ll know when we see the garage door go on  that seems to be the common denominator

I bet the city prepared a 90 day report on the SnS district and found that it only took up a tiny portion of the overall beverage sales in DTR, laying to rest fears of dRuNkToWn, and paving the way for expansion. However, if the original SnS area had been GlenSo to the Warehouse Dist., I bet it would have been much more successful.

I have used the SnS option exactly twice.
Poll: Who has walked around DTR with a beverage and how many times?

Iā€™ve done it several times now, probably 5-6 times.

Successful yes, but not in a good way. I have several friends who live on Glenwood South, who enjoy the nightlife, and they are expressing concerns itā€™s getting out of hand. Now add into the mix 2 to 3 hundred people who are allowed to open carry drinks down the sidewalk and things could escalate even further.

I was in Durhamā€™s ā€˜Bullpenā€™ last weekend and I am a fan of where they selected theirs.

Only once so far. I honestly keep forgetting itā€™s a thing. Havenā€™t really seen that many people taking advantage of it yet.

isnā€™t the bullpen basically the entire walkable downtown?

More or less yep it is. This is from their website that shows the boundaries of it.

I have to say, thatā€™s a pretty nice website. Thank you for sharing! :+1:

Yeah I havenā€™t at all and havenā€™t really seen anyone else either. I honestly forgot about it. That being said, I usually am downtown visiting a drinking establishment to actually enjoy the ambience that Iā€™m paying extra for. I donā€™t really want a beer on the sidewalk in a plastic cup that I paid 8 bucks for. I can see times this might be fun anyways, but winter isnā€™t really one of them.
