…and then the great recession happened.
Any updates for this poor project?
There is another review scheduled for 2/6.
It’s just mind blowing the delays with hotels in DTR.
At least the Origin Hotel actually got built, but it’s a far less complex building compared to it’s adjoining 10 story office tower, which is already an in-service building. Meanwhile Origin STILL isn’t opened and still needs a couple months before opening it’s doors.
Crazy!
Take it easy on the poor guy trying to finish the insides. After all he’s working as fast as he can and in there all alone.
Lol I go by there sometimes tho and it really is like 1 guy working…
Don’t know what this means but could be foundation prep? Not the best shots. Captured while rolling.
If I had to guess, they know something we don’t about their alleged review tomorrow. There’s a lot of parking lot/foundation slab/etc. that didn’t go when the buildings were torn down. I’m assuming they’re planning to start construction soon and wanted to finish up the demo.
You don’t start spending money until you are ready to start construction
Will this be like the aloft on Hillsborough as far as size and layout? Hotel up front with small exposed parking deck in rear? Or will the parking have hotel above it as well?
@TheNightHawk Two story stand-alone parking deck behind a 7 story hotel.
Ah, ok. So pretty much exactly like Aloft on Hillsborough
No reason to be sad about that. You won’t even see the parking deck, and it’s probably a nice buffer to the neighborhood behind. I’ve honestly never noticed the one that’s apparently behind aloft.
I agree,… and trust me… I’m very happy about this project coming in… but its just another exposed deck in Raleigh. I really don’t understand it. I hope they at least wrap the north side with hotel having the deck entrance below (similar to origin)… because this will be the side that is actually on Willard. It would make the corner view look better (in my opinion)
Look on the bright side. A stand alone deck is much easier to redevelop into something else in the future than one integrated into a building. At least a stand alone deck and be knocked down.
I’m all about standalone parking decks. A standalone deck, when eventually removed, reduces the total number of available parking spaces downtown. Once we reach a point where we are no longer building more and more parking at nearly a 1-to-1 rate for each person or job that moves downtown, these decks can all be slowly demolished and replaced with something better.
You’ll have a much harder time getting the owner of a building that has a built-in parking deck not to use that deck for something useful or economically beneficial to themselves. Currently, there isn’t much that a space built originally as a parking deck can be used for other than a parking deck, so these built-in decks will sit there, eternally making personal vehicle ownership and use downtown easier and more convenient.
There has been some talk of building parking decks that can be retrofitted for other uses in the future; small, reasonably-priced apartments, maybe? I’m hopeful that this actually bears some fruit, but as far as I’m aware it has yet to actually be done, so who knows. Maybe all these parking decks can be turned into for-rent storage spaces or something. Not ideal, but at least they’d be storing something other than cars.
The Willard has been issued site and utility permits. So, that is the work that is happening. It looks like the building passed today’s review, but there is some sort of final review scheduled for Tuesday which I think is just some sort of paper work thing. There does not appear to be anymore review comments. So, it is looking like it is good to go.
It will be so far in the future before those buildings with built-in parking decks will no longer be needed that we will all be dead before that happens.
That’s probably true for me. For my life’s experiences, I am prioritizing my decisions on being in places that don’t require me to use a car for everything, because I surely know that I won’t be significantly riding rail in my useful lifetime.
Yay! Omg it’s finally happening… Lol
This is one like 400H and the Edison office tower that I never thought we’d see, but here we go.
