Bloc 83 - One Glenwood and Origin Hotel

At what stage of building increasingly dehumanizing boxes because the market demands it do we stop calling it Soviet style? :stuck_out_tongue:

Yeah, I hate to break it to everybody but this is pure capitalism at its finest.

Pretty sure I stayed in an Airbnb across from this building in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina last year. Main difference being that this building is brand new and not bombed out and full of garbage.

The Origin Hotel will have a street level glass storefront. That’s another differentiator.

Ok then I’ll just call it the standard mediterranean concrete block like this set in Lisbon.. Lots of lovely places started going 100% utilitarian after WWII. I suppose we’ve been there to varying degrees as well, but seems like we shouldn’t have to settle for that as often as we do. I guess the ‘market’ will decide which hotel lives and which struggle.

They just announced at Dram and Draught that their last day will be July 14 in the current location, and they need a few days at least to open.

Ahhh yes, the brown on beige on tan aesthetic. My college roommate was a pro at this look.

It looks like they aren’t going to have garage-type doors here. It’s a real shame if that’s the case.

As someone who goes there frequently, I like the idea of open garage doors but it lets in all the second hand smoke as if the smokers were right inside. I could do without that.

Maybe in that back room that they have now?
I like how the garage door opens up the space to the outside. I also feel like in situations where there isn’t much street presence, having an open “window” like that brings more awareness of the fact that there is a business lurking inside the window.

Dram and Draught is looking more finished inside, and they even have this neon sign. Can’t wait to see it lit up. Also, beers are half off Sunday for their final day. Definitely need to check that out.

Signage is almost always nearly the very last thing to be completed on a job. Remember that for future reference. If there is a permanent sign, opening is happening in days most likely.

Fencing has gone up around phase 2. Anyone know if they have demo permits already?

I was wondering about that too. Went by yesterday, amazed at the progress of removing the stuff from the old location, and noticed all the orange barrels and stuff. Very curious on the timeline for the demo

Wow the entire half block has fences around it, and Dram and Draught sure has changed a lot since I was there Sunday! Looks like they’re moving fast.

Origin Hotel is looking closer to being finished too.

I lived on Willard behind Char Grill for five years just waiting and waiting for someone to do something cool with that little Esso station. I wish Dram & Draught had arrived sooner so that little building could’ve gotten a little more use during its life.

I really hope the sidewalk in front of the Origin opens up soon now that this block is fenced. Walking and running in this area has been (and will be) a pain for awhile.

The Origin is looking marginally less like an eastern bloc apartment building!

Wow that was fast! D2 was out for a hot minute and they’re already demo’ing!
