If you squint you can see downtown off in the distance, a short walk away
A few other points of reference on capacity:
Lincoln Theater: 750
The Ritz: 1,400
Meymandi Concert Hall (Duke Energy Center): 1,750
DPAC: 2,700
Red Hat: 6,000
So I think this is a great size. Fills a need and will be operated by a major player.
They definitely going tall
Not pictured is the Kings Motel where a weary traveler may stop and rest.
Gotta make the point though- I really don’t think this represents the distance well at all.The skyline looks closer than this from I-40, it would absolutely not look this far away from the Downtown South properties lmao. I honestly think they’re kinda selling themselves short with this render, because the skyline would realistically appear WAY closer…
ya their perspectives are kinda messed up here. it’s probably to show that “hey we’re near the city but we’re actually our own thing”
HaHa
Looks like a converted parking deck!
They can have it…LOL
Yeah, but I’d think the selling point would be how close to downtown they actually are, vs North Hills which truly is the distance represented in this image… Very strange choice by the graphics dept!
Personally I think it looks really cool. The only thing about it that doesn’t look good is I can see the beer prices from here
AEG Was there an amphitheater planned for Dix? I do hope this steals shows from DPAC and Walnut Creek, but… always wary of hyper commercialized music venues and whether it will take away from Dix/Red Hat/other potential music venues that may be planned or the glimmer in eye for actual downtown. ‘Downtown’ South is a bit of a misnomer here imo.
Maybe that is the North Hills skyline by the time this gets finished being built.
What’s wrong? You don’t think $14 Bud Light tallboys are a good deal???
Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth. We need any amenities in CoR proper no matter where they go. Downtown will eventually draw things back once it matures from this awkward growth phase.
Something like the Moody Theatre in Austin (Austin City Limits), capacity 2,750, would be cool somewhere downtown, maybe even the east side of Moore Square. That’s a big block, but the venue wouldn’t need to be quite that large if fitting in some parking cuts the buildable envelope. Not sure if it would fly in this current environment though. Or somewhere else downtown (if AT&T ever sells that building, that could also work? - right across from city parking deck that isn’t used as much at night). Moody is even directly across the street from Austin City Hall and its parking deck. I know the city is planning to tear down those parking decks behind City Hall and building back parking with some kind of commercial real estate above it, maybe this could be it, especially if they do decide to expand the convention center over Red Hat.
I hear you - I’m skeptical of any mainstream entertainment conglomerate.
I’ll remain optimistic considering AEG owns Bluebird Theater (Denver), Brooklyn Steel, and the Georgia Theater (Athens)…
Is there any info on what phase this is in? Or where on the site map it’s going? (For us non-TBJ subscribers)
This is really exciting. I think this is going to be a really great addition to the city scene. And, as noted above, 3,000 seats and indoors is really in that sweet spot that’s just the right size for a lot of performers, and it’s something we don’t currently have in Raleigh. And I think the location is just fine.
Does anyone know what the N.C. Museum of Art seats for concerts? I saw Lake Street Dive perform there last week, and I was really impressed. It’s a very nice outdoor venue.
2,700 according to an Indy guide article from 2013. I also like the NCMA venue a lot even though it’s very car centric.
What I don’t like about this is that, if North Hills is any indication, the local small businesses that places like Red Hat, DPAC, Cat’s Cradle, etc spill out to are $ that goes back into the community and adds more unique flavors than the chains that fill North Hills, or even the complete absence of such places around the PNCs, NCMAs and Walnut Creeks. I think that takes away from the concert experience (last night we ate dinner at Sitti and saw a show at Pour House, and would have gone to Bittersweet if it was open afterwards) and also money out of the community to conglomerates like AEG and chains like Bonefish, Firebirds, etc.
But our discussion is likely moot if Kane already has entitlements for something like this, and even if he doesn’t, the city is not likely to deny for a multitude of reasons.
Sounds like phase 1 as construction set to start spring 2023 and complete fall 2024. Theres no site map on the tbj article though i believe its on one of the DTS slides on their site.
Surprised no one has mentioned the rooftop stage in the renderings. That could be a sweet little setup too.
