Downtown South development

Well small caveat: I only want Moxy if it goes on the spot that will destroy any hope of high speed rail, because it’ll drive Orulz crazy…

Voted “Other” for keeping the Red Roof Inn.

I thought of the same thing. Or the opposite, really. I’ll take a Moxy as long as this one stays out of the way of high speed rail.

SUPER DUPER CHOO CHOO COMING THROUGH!!

Honestly, I voted other because I couldn’t care less about Downtown South at the moment. As much as I hate the southern gateway into downtown and hope to see it become a North Hills-like district in the future, I just know it will only sap development from downtown’s core. Give me a Westin and a Conrad on or near Fayetteville Street, that’s what I really want.

I voted for Conrad because I always look forward to my annual visit to the Conrad Osaka. The experience of arriving at the lobby on the top floor is incredible, making it an exceptional urban hotel:

I voted for the most corporate/suburban brand. I’d rather have the other brands in Raleigh’s actual downtown.

Next poll… How tall should the tallest building in DS be? (Floor height):

  • 50+
  • 40-50
  • 30-40

This is for a building with any use (residential, office, hotel, mixed-use)

I don’t foresee a Ritz in Raleigh until the Umstead runs out of Capacity. That’s BY FAR the nicest hotel in the Triangle, and more central to way more travelers than any downtown Raleigh location (unfortunately)

I think it’ll be possible soon enough… we just need to keep creating local attractions (Potential MLB & MLS teams, Dix Park, etc.).

Of the 3 you mentioned, I only really see Dix Park as an “attraction” - and I agree we need more actual attractions for people to WANT to come visit Raleigh and do. Professional sports, while they most definitely would entice tourism, are still too niche, IMO.

I agree to disagree, I think bringing MLB to Raleigh could cause an NFL to Nashville effect. Nashville was “tiny” before the Titans relocated there.

Flipside, the Jags really haven’t done much to change the perception of Jacksonville. They’re still the afterthought among Floridian cities.

Jacksonville has meat without bones, Raleigh and the Triangle area have bones and minimal meat. I don’t think we’re on Jacksonville’s level of unknown.

We must realize Raleigh is no longer just some small-medium sized city. The urban area of Raleigh is almost the same size as Charlotte. Unfortunately, the politics and old school nimby culture is holding this place back. The population will continue to explode and Raleigh will still remain a wonderful larger city. We may as well adjust.

Bring on the big city amenities!!!

Is that causation or correlation, though?

To be fair to Jacksonville, I recently visited St. Augustine in July which is maybe an hour or less outside of Jax - and it was absolutely bumping with people, very much the definition of a tourist town - so I think that probably funnels away any tourism/visitation of Jax.

Yeah I’ve been there for work a couple times. It’s a sleepy city, and it gets chilly in the winter. The dolphins playing in the river is cute, though.

I think that should be the prime spot of MLB and get this right now there doing studies for what area to put a stadium in I think its a waste and they should go with DTS, otherwise I think we need an amusement park here.

I’ve been to Jax are as it is known by locals or at least Jaguars fans as “Duval” a reference to there county. Its a nice area I’ve been to a football game there passionate over there. Not a lot to do but I was over there for one day.

I think if our council changes into a good direction in November we should have a good shot. Every city dealt with its NIMBYs before they became what they are today.
