I am actually not the biggest fan of this company. they have come in and done light renovations to buildings in Durham that are sitting on prime lots. Specifically, 433 W. Main and 505 S. Duke.
That said, maybe they can do a good job here. They did a great job at Viceroy.
But the City could deny any rezoning request, building permits, etc…period which effectively would kill the idea of tearing this down…not to mention litigation which could drag on for years. Paying what they paid, tearing it down and not being allowed to rebuild something would be problematic financially.
This may be a ridiculous thought, but I wonder if the street section of Fayetteville St. when it was reconstructed with the parking below was built to support a building structure like where FNB/Charter, etc sit. The thought in my head is, put a building or two where the street is and Fayetteville ends at Davie. Stupid thought?
Yes, no offense. We already have so many streets planned to be closed off to vehicle traffic due to RR right of ways. We need our city streets to be more connected, not less.
If I understand you suggestion of building placement, that would block the money shot between Capital building and Memorial Auditorium. Not to mention would removed a lot of outdoor/plaza space that’s there now.
That is basically where the old convention center used to be, and it sucked, so no thanks. Restoring the vista from Memorial Auditorium to the historic Capitol Building was a big part of the Fayetteville Street reconstruction, and it is something worth preserving.
If we want more towers on Fayetteville, extend it the final block southward from Lenoir to South and sell off the parking lots to the east and west of it. Honestly, I find it extremely frustrating that we are in such a protracted booming economy and nobody at the city has even suggested moving forward with this.
Haha!!! Sometimes random thoughts aren’t popular nor make sense. Totally agree with you guys. The thought more came from wondering how they designed/engineered the garage structure and if there was any accommodation for that kind of scenario. I suppose not.
Sorry not meant to be personal. I know I’ve had ideas that as soom as I said then I realized “oh man that is one stupid A idea”. Normally in front of a room full of people that instantly had same thought. That I wished would open up in floor and get me out of room
I was going for the “Stupidest Idea Badge” but I think 5 people telling me I’m silly wasn’t enough cause I haven’t seen it show up in my badge vault yet.
Let Mayor Mary Ann Baldwin and the new Raleigh city Council know seriously they are that open, believe me very bold ideas are coming forward and new bold idea’s are very much wanted and looked at #BEBOLD
Rumor is City got “blown up” with responses and high level proposals for the 2 blocks across from the performing arts center. Both parcels were mandatory 40+ stories. 1 office. 1 hotel
I can’t remember but am I correct in thinking that the city’s request did not include a time table to finish these “projects”? And we all know at least one “developer” that would purchase one or both pieces of land and then say, I’ll build great projects…later…years later?
So add 121 and two 40-story buildings on the other end of Fayetteville Street and have six 400-ft or taller towers in all. Talk about a skyline changer! That would be pretty darn cool.
Where is that info coming from? It says on the RFI that they’re zoned for up to 40 stories, but it doesn’t list that as mandatory. And wouldn’t a 500-room hotel be way less than 40 stories?
