Agree with your sentiments 100%. It is a niche offering, I don’t know if I have ever seen one before, and I think it is cool offering for people who are into that.
Also could be more popular than people realize. There are a couple of yarn shops around town that have been here for years, so someone must be going and buying their product.
Hey, a public activity/art gallery of sorts replacing a boring bank branch downtown?? I’ll take it!!! Would I personally prefer weirder art in this town? Absolutely. But in order to get to a place where more weird art galleries are viable, we first need MORE ART in general.
I’m also willing to bet that it gets completely slammed during the Quilting Convention that takes place about once a year.
The NCMA has a shockingly cool exhibit of historic quilts going on now, on loan from a museum in Winston-Salem. A big portion of them are these really intricate white-on-white pieces with lace integrated into them.
So yeah, big overlap.
I was actually thinking “ones of visitors”, but I love your optimism.
Handmade lace is actually extremely labor intensive to make and IMO it’s pretty amazing.
If you don’t know any one who does handwork, you a missing a surprizing large subculture that is right under you nose, that has skewed much younger in the last few years. While this museum won’t bring in huge numbers, I suspect it could be pretty popular with a crowd that will also look to lunch as well.
Yeah it’s not for me. But I’m glad it’s there and if it brings some folks downtown, why not? Better then a bank or some generic fast food joint, or an empty storefront with boarded windows.
My great grandmothers from Poland, Ukraine and Croatia had some serious lace skills.
Anthony Rapillo and Katsuji Tanabe to open an underground speakeasy under Sir Walter apartments.
They also want to include a DJ, dance floor, bottle service place in it. They described it as very loud, very dark, and very crowded… and a vibe. So sounds horrible to me but if they can do the restaurant well and with staggered hours, I’d be happier. I guess they want to bring a bigger draw, and that area could really use it. I also understand not everything is made for me to enjoy. I’d just hope that such a unique space will have it done right. I’m already a little skeptical about Flour and Barrel, after they blew up social media with months of teases, and then exclusive influencer soft opening crap for a couple of months after that. Still optimistic for both, despite my post here sounding pessimistic.
How awesome, I was hoping someone would do exactly this. The space must be a lot larger than I imaged with a dance floor, DJ, bar, and restaurant. This has serious potential.
Looks like more retail is coming to Fayetteville St. I’m not sure exactly where this will be. Google maps says it’s where North State Bank is, but the address on the building is 230. Maybe upstairs?

Seems like there are a lot of vintage clothing shops concentrating downtown with two right next to each other on Hargett (where Read With Me and Gathering Gallery used to be).
ETA photo since it won’t preview
It’s the location next to North State, where Kimbrell’s furniture was located at 232 Fayetteville
I thought the Kimbrell’s location was 210. That’s also a huge huge space.
The addresses bookending the bank (230) are 228 to the north and 234 to the south. According to the county property records, 232 somehow part of the North State Bank/Lucette Grace building.
I’m pretty sure that there’s an underground space in this building where Vault sports apparel used to be. Small space but pretty perfect for a vintage clothes shop.
OHHHHH that will be a great replacement for that idiot douchebag’s shop. Good catch!
Wonder how or why there are so many vintage shops popping up all over downtown Raleigh. Think this is the 3rd one coming up in the past year.
