Moore Square

That was the only thing I saw on the City Council agenda. Sorry, should’ve just said first building - I’m not sure how they are breaking up their phases.

The City wants to move ahead with the affordable housing part of the project first. That is why this is coming up now.

This is how it was broken down. Hoping there are some further comments on the second part of phase 1.

EDIT:

going to quote my previous comment on the last update back in October for people looking to see what was previously stated:

You are right about the spot proposed for the Norwood house, that is a good location.
Thanks for all the reminders!

I won’t miss that Killo pest exterminator building that has been around longer than I have been in Raleigh-- at least since 2005.

Prime Downtown Raleigh property that has been sitting vacant for nearly two decades–WILD.

This is such a key block for downtown. I hope that they do it right!

FIVE+ years for the main mixed-use development is wild. Everything will cost exponentially more by then lmao. Still, glad they finally acquired the last missing piece - everybody has their price.

With the city market hotel going in, I’m guessing there will be significant parking added via a deck of some sort. It’d be cool if they took away street parking from inside city market and added parklets or some sort of extended outdoor seating.

With the lights overhead and the cobble stone streets, I feel like it would really make this a desirable location both for small restaurants/cafes and also pedestrians.

I always felt like the cars parked on both sides took away from the experience.

it absolutely takes away from the pedestrian experience and is not even a remotely decent driver experience, it’s way too tight and bumpy for cars to belong here.

Agreed, City Market should just be closed off to cars, period. It’s the perfect pedestrian-only area in the city.

Heresy! How dare you attack cars!

So is the grocery gone then? That’s a bummer.

Edit: nvm, saw the rumors of grocery at 600 new bern, hope restored for East Raleigh walkability.

From what I understood, I don’t think the grocery store is gone from the Moore Square plans yet. They’re just working on the affordable housing component at the corner of Martin and Bloodworth first. The grocery + retail on Person will come later. Someone correct me if I’m wrong.

This was already discussed!

Proposed timeline for Moore Square:

https://www.bizjournals.com/triangle/news/2024/05/23/moore-square-redevelopment-raleigh-construction.html

" The reimagining of Moore Square in Raleigh is moving forward with a goal of starting construction in September 2025."

“The apartment building in phase one is expected to welcome residents in late 2027 with the hotel opening in fall 2028. The remaining portion of the east site is targeted to open in 2029.”

While I twiddle my thumbs waiting for action on Nash sq, this is good news for Moore. I am excited to see this moving forward with so many important pieces included. All the elements appear to be here for a great finished project. When I was a young parent, a hotel next to a children’s museum was always a jack pot.
Now, if we could just get something going on either of the lots at Nash to go along with the new City Tower.

They were hacking down a 100 yr old oak in Nash Square recently…probably not the ‘action’ you were hoping for

To be fair, it was falling down by itself already

Yes, to be fair - just like the prior big boy that was taken down along that stretch a couple years back - it was time, a danger to the public and all those other realities of nature amidst the human liability setting…
There was (social media) talk about it being referred to Raleigh Arts to see if something might become of the trunk / wood. Woulda been kinda cool to lay the trunk down right there and let an artist do the "Umstead trunk art’ thing on it but, alas - hopefully it can be repurposed for public amenity in some way.
