Awesome news coming from Transfer CO. Usually they send me an email before these press releases.
-Italian sausage/pasta & butcher shop. Also former Chef from Trophy will create a burger place Mama Cow’s https://www.bizjournals.com/triangle/news/2019/05/02/raleigh-food-hall-finalizes-its-list-of-tenants.html?iana=hpmvp_trig_news_headline
“Alimentari at Left Bank is a creative collaboration between Josh DeCarolis of Durham’s Mothers and Sons, as well as Saxapahaw’s Left Bank Butchery. Alimentari will serve farm-fresh Italian specialties and fresh pasta by the pound, as well as being the only whole-animal butchery and charcuterie shop in downtown Raleigh. Animals will be sourced from Cane Creek and Braeburn Farms.” CAN’T WAIT(Local butcher shop and local seafood in one building!)
Also appears they are going to combine the interior opens spaces of Burial beer and Long Leaf BBQ. I originally thought these were too secluded from each other with only exterior facing entrances.
“The Transfer Co. and tenant Burial Beer are currently working on expanding its bodega-style taproom from its current 670 square-foot space to 2,000 square feet by combining the brewery with Longleaf Swine BBQ located behind Burial.”
Has anyone had anything good there? I’ve been to 3 places and have found the food quality to be mediocre especially compared to mostly everything in Morgan Street Food Hall. I want to like this place but the food leaves something to be desired.
Personally, I’ve felt the opposite. I’m a big fan of the Bagels at Benchwarmers, everything I’ve had at Locals has been great (especially the smoked fish dip), and Captain Cookie surprised me with how much I enjoyed it since I’m not usually much of a dessert fan.
I felt Bul box and che were both tasty enough, but not spectacular. Haven’t had chhote or dank yet, but sure I will try soon.
I’m actually curious as to what you enjoyed at Morgan street, because I tried a few places and was underwhelmed. I may have mis-ordered or gone to the wrong stall. Always looking for a good recommendation.
Local is good. I recently tried the Indian place and had the lamb curry. I had to put seasoning on it. Which told me all I needed to know. And my friends tell me that Dank Burrito isn’t very good. Has anyone been to any of the new places? I’m willing to try them again. May have just been an off day.
The bacon and sausage quiche from Carroll’s Kitchen is amazing!
The CowBar was vey good but I only had them during their open week so they may have gone downhill since then. I appreciated the thoughtful amount of seasoning on the burger’s beef patty.
I am not a fan of Wicked Taco. Using soggy roasted chicken in a chicken taco just doesn’t work on any level.
Curry in a Hurry I found to be very good. The chef at this place has won awards for best indian food in a few publications. My taste buds found no issue with her accolades.
Cousin’s Maine Lobster although overpriced has an amazing lobster and tots contraption.
Mama’s Ice Cream is probably my favorite ice cream downtown (used to be Treat).
The Broth hasn’t disappointed me. Nothing spectacular but I give them the nod over Tonbo on Wilmington.
And finally Oak City Fish and Chips. What can you say here. Just well seasoned fried unhealthy goodness.
I think you can make the case that there are both good and bad options at both places (depending on taste buds). But I would then say that if even the food options are about the same level at both places, the atmosphere at Transfer Co blows Morgan St out of the water. Morgan St just feels way too cramped.
I’m a fan of Locals and Captain Cookie. The space will get even better when Burial expands. I haven’t tried the new Indian place but I was not impressed with Curry In A Hurry at Morgan Street. I also wasn’t a fan of Dank Burrito.
I think Che is better than Makus. That is the only food comparison I can make. Also I don’t like blaring club, pop and hip hop music…I prefer quiet, back ground indie, or americana…I am much more likely to go hang out at Transfer for that reason regardless of any difference in the food. But that’s just me.
I am really struggling with the idea of eating some place proudly calling itself dank. Maybe I don’t know the “new slang” but at least for me, dank is not a positive term.
Dank Burrito has a food truck and another location in Morehead City so they’ve been around for a little bit…they’re not a new place now calling themselves “Dank”
Transfer feels like a food hall whereas Morgan Street feels like an urban food court. I don’t really know what the distinction is but it makes sense in my head.
