Raleigh Bikeshare

I went and hung out with a friend this afternoon at Dix Park for 1.5 hours and from a distance saw at least 10 people checking out Citrix Cycles from the station there.

More stations on the way? link

from the original bikeshare feasibility report that may give some clues about where some of the stations may be located:

Glenwood South needs more than 1 station. Especially now with Smoky Hollow, it’s the district with the most residents/potential riders. The density of stations in Glenwood South should at least mimic the density of stations in/around the Warehouse District.
I think that there needs to be stations at these locations (at least):

  1. Publix @ West St.
  2. 1Glenwood/2Hillsborough
  3. corner of Lane&Glenwood
I’d also move the station at Armadillo Grill one block west to Boylan and Tucker so that it’s closer to residents.
It seems evident to me that the folks running this don’t understand how people actually use bike share, or how to grow it. You put stations where the most people live, at places where the most people go, and ideally near where it connects to other transit options. In this case, that’s essentially the RLine and the Bus service. If you can take politics out of the decisions, it’s as simple as that.
Where you don’t put stations is in single family neighborhoods, other low density development, or in locations that are wildly disconnected from the system by distance.

Here’s the link to the original bike share feasibility report from 2014 and gives some insight into what decisions were made in respect to the original station locations: https://cityofraleigh0drupal.blob.core.usgovcloudapi.net/drupal-prod/COR16/BikeShareBusinessPlan.pdf

Obviously a lot has changed around downtown Raleigh since then so I wouldn’t be surprised to see changes to proposed station locations based on that.

Thanks for the link. One would not only hope, but expect that the city would re-evaluate as the city center continues to grow.
That phase 2 station map seems way too widely dispersed to me. Without a density of stations in an area, it’s not a robust solution. It just becomes an outpost like the Art Museum is now.
I think that they just get way more dense to make the system way more useful as the first choice for getting around town. The more effective it is in supporting ones needs, the more money they can charge for yearly subscriptions.

I’m looking for ones that would be near Crabtree/North Hills/East Six Forks Rd. I wouldn’t mind using one to get from Crabtree to the Art Museum via the greenway. Same would be to go to N. Hills East Six Forks. Don’t think we need a huge amount of them, but a small set would be a good thing to see if it would be in demand.

New Citrix Cycle station coming to the Longleaf Hotel. Drive by too quick to get a pic but work has started.

I forgot to mention this a couple of days ago and it seems it just broke on @RALtoday.

From here on to be known as “Cardinal Bikeshare”. Citrix is dropping their sponsorship and if you notice in the current logo there’s a cardinal, so they’re going with that easy transition, presumably until there’s another sponsor.

I have a feeling Citrix will no longer be here for much longer. Office has been pretty much empty and I’ve heard mostly negative accounts from former employees about how inefficient it is there. Them dropping sponsorship just reads to me that they’re cutting expenses any way possible to stay afloat.

I agree. They will be owned by a PE firm soon. They are also either in some dying markets (VDI) or in areas where their solution doesn’t really compete well. We’ll see if they can combine with Tibco to realign their strategy. They need some seriously restructuring. This Raleigh office may be a casualty in those moves I’d think, to cut expenses.

If this is the new bike livery, I think it looks kinda lame. Hopefully they can keep the leaves and cardinal graphic with the new name, but perhaps that is also tied to the Citrix branding.

I’m with you on this, that fender is super boring. Love the name Cardinal, hate the look.

Just lean into the Cardinal name, it’s not that hard to find a reasonable logo to add. Densify the Raleigh tree logo and put a cardinal landing in it.

The Cardinal is sponsoring our bike share program now right?

Any idea how much this sponsorship costs?
