Raleigh Union Station and RUSbus Facility / Union West

I don’t know,If like this at all Oakcity, they should have had all this already worked out smh, but in your opinion is this a good or bad thing? Hope they not downgrading the height smh.

Having dinner at Oku right now and walked by this. Even more surreal in person!

I’m good with a few months delay if they’re making the last revision better.

Are they actually saving any of the facade?

Yes, the two eastern facing corners.

So no, not really   :sob:

Considering you’ll have ingress/egress for buses and I believe some retail there isn’t much to be saved. I’m happy they saved what they did.

Yeah, another one of those “just is what it is” side-effects of this development. I’m happy for what they are saving, just busting balls really.

If they are doing VE, I hope the habitrail bridge connection to Union Station is up for consideration before they drop some of the nicer design elements.

The bridge will be expensive and neat to look at, but won’t add much utility from a transportation or access perspective.

There are lots of possible pedestrian connections from Union Station that would provide significantly improved access. Union station is well connected from the east, but any other direction, especially the west, is extremely lacking. The RUSBUS bridge might debatably slightly improve access from the northeast, but that isn’t really where the problem is in the first place. It will save about 100 feet of walking distance, but require more steps up and down from ground level - in the end probably not saving any time at all, except for the narrow case of walking between the station and the RUSBUS apartments or parking deck (where you’re already above grade.)

Saw on the Cary Mayor’s website that their downtown multi-modal transit facility project has moved into the land acquisition/final design phase. Exciting to see Cary moving forward with their project as RUSBUS is starting to take shape. Taking bets…which one do we think will be finished first?

Well, whose project is more substantial and complicated?

It’s hard to compare scale and complexity on these because they both have their own challenges and particular constraints. RUSBUS has federal implications, but one would say it’s possibly further along in one aspect as they’ve already got the land and are in the process of clearing the existing structure.

The Cary facility, smaller in scale and no federal involvement, is acquiring property but might have a more aggressive/quicker build out timeframe? Either way it wouldn’t surprise me if both are finishing up in the 2024-2025 timeframe.

I was trying to find some renderings of what the new Cary facility could look like but I don’t think there’s anything yet, at least not easily locatable.

Since it obviously needs to accommodate both intercity rail and commuter rail along the NCRR side, one would think they’d need to double track around an island platform to the north, no?

Yeah you would think that, but there’s definitely more knowledgeable folks on these boards when it comes to rail/tracks/etc. who could probably speak to that more than I could.

They don’t have land and don’t have a design team yet. Renderings are very far away at this point.

Grade separation for this proposed MMTF in downtown Cary is going to be an absolute joy.
