Show Off Things From Other Cities

I personally hate Alamo’s current location. It’s not that I can’t or won’t go there, but it just seems like it’s on the opposite end of Raleigh from everywhere else fun to go. I get they like their old strip mall vibe, but at least do it on Western Blvd or Atlantic Ave or something. It’s a minor and selfish gripe, but regardless, they’d be awesome downtown if they could find the right kind of space.

The food at the Alamo is not the highest quality though. An Alamo downtown with a proper kitchen would be great.

Oh I don’t know, if your main orbit is Person Street and sometimes Fayetteville Street, one might think it’s on the right side of downtown.

Seriously though, the alternative a similar distance west would be… the Village? Western/Hillsborough by NC State? One isn’t exactly their vibe and the other would be probably be swamped by college kids.

Atlantic is interesting. Place it near Torchy’s and you’ve got New Austin in Midtown.

@Francisco, Yeah I don’t really love how expensive the food is for not that wonderful. I still always have fun. Better food and better location would be great (for me at least!)

@oakcityyimby I just feel like momentum is in WH district, GS, Bloc83, Hillsborough St…and New Bern Ave area seems remote. But Person St is fun, and I’m sure the people that live out that way to be close to downtown but maybe more affordable like its location. I’m certainly biased living in west Raleigh. I get that Cameron Village and NC State aren’t really the right spot either. I would love to see it where Kroger was by Six Forks/Atlantic area (now an upcoming biotech building)…that would’ve fit and been another great catalyst for that area.

This conversation is funny timing, Birmingham just had an announcement for an Alamo Drafthouse right in the middle of downtown in a historic 120+ year old steam plant:

Unfortunately I don’t think there is a comparable building here in Raleigh, but it would be awesome if so.

I feel like I’d like to visit Birmingham someday. But don’t we have an old water plant at the south end of downtown? Someone with power (like Dylan or Leo) tell Alamo to revamp that place and relocate!

Hot take. But I don’t get the hype of Alamo. Went there last week for the first time. I’ve been to a handful of other dine in theaters and my experience at Alamo was on the low end of those in my experience. Wasn’t bad, but didn’t understand the hype.

@Daniel dang it man, you are stealling all my AL.com thunder!! lol.

I searched and found a summary of the story on thenextmiami.com and its viewpoint doesn’t surprise me since it’s coming from a journal called The Financial Times. I sort of expect them to have the viewpoint that the summary of the article suggests. I’ll hold my judgment on whether or not I think it’s true because I have yet to see the sort of announcement in Miami that Wake County got with Apple’s commitment and its staggering average salaries. Sure a lot of hyper rich people are moving to the area to play with their money in a way that may be limited where they made it, but I’ve yet to see indications that Miami is going to be the sort of place that’s going to create its own homegrown future billionaires to sustain itself at the top rung of the ladder, or provide opportunity for the many others at the bottom to climb it.

Miami does already have a huge industry that churns out wealth - it’s the banking capital of Latin America.

Among large metro areas, Miami also has a lot of poverty and substantially lower median incomes than Raleigh. Its education level is also quite low, and has lots of obstacles to overcome before it can run a victory lap.

That’s similar to something I came up with a few months ago (might have to scroll around on the map - it’s a compilation of various road ideas throughout NC). I kept going past Fayetteville St out to Briggs Ave before tying it back in with the connector, but I think Durham should push hard to rebuild 147 as an urban network of roads once the connector is finally finished.

Also the South Bank building is coming down! Pic from last Friday.

The reasons to rebuild it as a boulevard definitely outweigh rebuilding it as a freeway. Except the most important reason unfortunately which is cost. Will be hell getting all the grade separations to be at grade. But it will be absolutely worth it at the end of the day. Would be game changing for Downtown Durham.

I’m about to be there this Saturday. Flying into SF but will mainly be in the East and North Bay.

Interesting concept that I think would potentially work on Fayetteville street, Smoky Hollow, or in Downtown South area once it’s built out. Saw on the Dallas business journal they’re opening a ‘Topgolf of Soccer’ concept bar to one of their districts. The article states they opened one in London and it’s been a huge success so far.

Here’s the website for the London one. Thoughts?

I think this one is new to me. 27 story tower in Durham on the YMCA site.

Durhams three tall buildings are all going to be residential. Pretty interesting, much like St Pete

So that’s two 27 story towers (this and the condo tower), one 25 story residential tower, and a 20-something story tower as well in DTD. That’s quite impressive.

Why can’t Raleigh have nice things like this?
