This might be the last goodbye for Cary. But maybe we’ll meet again… somewhere.
Things they change, my friend.

Shooting in the parking deck in the boujee shopping district and now in front of the hippest place to buy a coat. Is there a safe place to be had in Cary? I think Pittsboro and Durham are on the move-up list for sure now.
Poor Cary and they try so hard to be the safest city in the world every year. That is an award that means to much to them.
And BTW I really do like Cary even though I am ragging pretty hard on them today.
The Wroclaw Panthers football team ad on this old school tram in Wroclaw Poland. Two things we could use, trams and more sports teams.
I rode similar trams in Kraków. A local woman that I met took me on my first one and insisted that we not pay the fare, because “nobody does”. I felt like an outlaw since we did in fact get away with it.
We can’t even get the Exchange to build the second building and a sky bridge. Meanwhile this little town in the Middle East has a pool sky bridge.
Closer to home is this new 42 story apartment tower in Charlotte’s Southend racing towards topping out which it should do in the next 30 days. Queensbridge Tower. This is the tallest building under construction in the Carolinas right now.
I am still trying to figure out WHY we get nice things but not the REALLY NICE THINGS??? It’s like the third kid who gets the first kids old clothes or something. Why do I feel this way? Should I seek therapy?
Or move to a bigger city. Despite our high opinions of Raleigh, it’s not that big of a deal in terms of larger, more famous, and longer established cities in the country (and certainly the world). It’s ok though.
It’s all relative. If we lived in the Triad we’d be pretty envious of the table scraps Raleigh does manage to get. Compared to Nashville, Austin, and Charlotte though it looks very lackluster.
Feels like the business community has decided the city will forever be stuck in its tier though despite its growth and they refuse to make the kinds of investments like they do in the other sunbelt tigers.
But I want to live in Raleigh…
Raleigh and Wake County gets great job announcements and since Covid you have had much better announcements than Charlotte. Plus your international flight growth is the envy of Nashville and Richmond I can tell you that. Even people here in Charlotte have noticed your impressive list of nonstop international destinations. All height restrictions should be removed downtown Raleigh period end of story. But your city does not want to do that. Charlotte in uptown and Southend has a broad zoing under UMUD that the sky is the limit on building height (as long as the FAA approves). People in Charlotte complain Raleigh gets all the good things LOL so I guess it works both ways. Nashville has plenty of new high rises but I would not live there for anything I would choose Raleigh 7 days a week and twice on Sunday. The city is chaotic with growth everywhere barely any infrastructure for vehicles much less mass transit or even for pedestrians. When I led a tour of downtown Raleigh for Charlotte people in June they liked the scale of your buildings and lots of historical ones intermixed with newer high rises. Plus Charlotte has been working on our new train station for 20 years uptown and all we have the tracks as it stands now.
Very few new towers in the US are impressive in terms of design. Maybe the new Chase tower in NYC. Im always surprised when i visit some random medium size city in Europe and they’re building world class towers with interesting designs.
The Sky Tower in Wroclaw might just be a big penis but at least its not a rectangular box.
Yeah Europe and the US are very different places. I like a lot about Europe, but not enough to live there. The middle east is getting some cool new buildings but is fairly grotesque given several factors.
Thank you for sharing, I really hope that city council will one day understand the potential benefits of doing away with the current height restrictions. Personally, I’d be fine with them simply rezoning all of the properties within the downtown boundary to 20 stories Mixed-use Development (MUD). Our skyline could be more impressive if we had more 10-20 story buildings surrounding our existing and planned 30+ story towers.
What’s crazy is that these world class towers often look really out of place in these cities.
Most towers with an interesting design are office buildings, and few cities in the US have the post-COVID demand to build them outside of New York.
And everyone says NYC is failing. Good for them! Lol
Tell that to folks in cities of similar size, like Charlotte or Nashville. Raleigh is relatively behind in every form of urban development unfortunately. The old money, nimby culture hinders this wonderful city’s potential.
Where does all the money go? I thought this place was rich?
Thank you for sharing your perspective, especially the piece about how folks from Charlotte see Raleigh and the part about Nashville. I mentioned weeks ago how Nashville is an absolute mess, it’s the truth. So it baffles me how people on here talk about our city. Did no one notice the interstate MOAT in the Charlotte pic? We don’t have that (reminder: Raleigh is the ONLY city in America our size or larger, many smaller as well, spared from interstate dissection of the downtown core. Please read that again). It sets us apart in a great way. Most people love it here but I guess they’re not on this forum to chime in. The trash talkers ignoring all of the active projects…it’s just a shame.
We need BRT to start and I’m livid about the recent updates, the delays are totally unacceptable. Lake Wheeler road is taking too long to start (looks like it finally will soon). Google maps is missing half of our bike lanes. We should know what the education campus looks like by now but we still don’t and cranes are about to go up. Just a few of the things I currently don’t love, recognizing there’s so much potential and opportunity to make Raleigh better. But jealous of Charlotte and Nashville?? Hellllllllllll no
