A couple photos from Florence. First is their central city trash. A crane truck comes along, lifts them up and empties them. You are suppose to sort your trash. The second is the train shed. The passanger traffic between Rome and Florence is crazy, with lots of Italians using it. 90 min trip on the high speed, 2 railway companies. You can leave about every 30 mins.

Italy…homeland of my ancestors…where they have trains…that are somewhat efficient. But they have trains. :locomotive:

Florence’s historic center was jam packed. Its great beacuse there is so much that is all so close, but good gravy, the hordes of people were nearly intolarable. But my favorite leather store was there, and I got a great deal, so a great day trip despite the clueless tourists.

Rome is building a new metro line, they have been for 3 decades. The Colosumn stop opened this year, after a decade of construction. It is awesome, and includes a great little free museum Now they are building 4 new stations at once, and hope to connect them by 2030. Time will tell. Since we all love cranes and construction, here are a couple pics:

One more set, since density is often discussed, here are a couple ideas from Rome. First is the central city:

And this out where I am staying, 2 blocks from a metro stop and 15/20 min walk to St. Peters.

We did Rome last summer for a few hours (cruise excursion) and I had enough as soon as I got off the bus. These pictures articulate the reason well, it’s just PACKED everywhere you go. I’ve been to NYC more times than I can count and I don’t mind the busy at all, but Rome was another level.

I hope you enjoy! Just not my cup of tea. :teapot:

The cruise ships have a well deserved bad rap here. The huge groups that just appear with their little flags… Rome, you need to be out early and know the side streets, the non cruise ship walk ways. Come with me sometime. But its a fair point that even Rome, with 2000 yrs of tourist is straining.

You should try Venice at the height of tourism season. It’s NUTS!
The last time I was in Venice (been 6 times) was at the end of the pandemic protocols and it was practically empty. This was in late March of 2022. I will treasure having that city to myself for more than a week.

This is why places like Rome (and other major cities in Italy) are done and done with the tourists. Yes they need them. But they are overrun and it is killing them at the same time as providing some sort of income. It is really sad and actually not fun for anyone. The locals or the tourists.

Dubai warning. Extremely tall buildings here cast long shadows! LOL. Nonstop from Charlotte to Abu Dhabi then 1 hour ride up to Dubai. Good thing I am looking for shadows since the heat is on here.

Impressive buildings. Watch out for things in the sky that aren’t birds, planes, or Superman.
