Quite the world traveler. I loved Oslo when we went s couple years back. If you see The Thief hotel by the coast, that’s where we stayed. Beautiful hotel, apparently named because the land used to be a hallows for hanging thieves. ![]()
A lot less slave labor, too.
Copenhagen tonight, so a report from here tomorrow! Then back home to good old Alabama, and The Heat …
I can hardly see from all the shadows!
Was in LA last week visiting my brother, and he took us to Cosm! Totally MIND-BLOWING!! I thought to myself, this should be in the new DTS (downtown south) development. It’s Imax on steroids! It’s labeled as a “Shared Reality Experience” . It also has a bar, and a restaurant, so it’s a 1 stop evening out. It’s also “family friendly” bottom line - we should get one here!!
OMFG The Matrix experience here looks like one of the coolest things a human being could ever experience… what did you see there???
Cirque de Soleil - I LITERALLY felt like I was there live!
I don’t know if this is the correct thread for this, but since it’s news from another city, I’m posting it here. Charlotte has killed the I-77 widening at the last minute, leaving $700 million in STIP money unprogrammed and up for grabs for other projects across the state! State leaders so far have shown no desire to dedicate the money to other projects in the Charlotte area.. Let’s hope CAMPO and the city play their cards right and secure a chunk of this money for BRT or regional rail.
One of Austin Tx’s trolls was burned to the ground …
What the hell is wrong with people?
What’s not mentioned in the article is that the NCDOT cancelled meetings/events with local stakeholders, essentially eliminating local input, and basically implied “you either do it our way or it doesn’t get done.”
Also worth noting that the members of the regional transportation planning agency (CRTPO) who voted to rescind support were the ones most likely to feel the impacts of the project, or had dealt with the debacle of the northern I-77 express lanes (Huntersville, Cornelius, and Davidson). The votes for continued support of the southern express lanes were from parts of the region that would be mostly unaffected either way.
Has there ever been a victory like this in the history of highways in NC?
Often the sentiment here leans toward assumption of doom, especially when it comes to state/county/city transportation organizations and highways. This is incredible news worth celebrating. Freeway fighters won. If Megan Kimble published City Limits later, she’d likely include this case study, given the “improbability” of this outcome. Good stuff.
IMO express lanes are worthless. The whole concept is backwards. Rich folks that can afford it, pay for the privilege to skip traffic, while everyone else is stuck in the cheap seat lanes. Use the money instead for mass transit like commuter rail, light rail, or BRT, so that everyday folks can take public transit, maybe get through life with one less car per family → less traffic for everyone, including the rich folks.
And while they’re at it, develop densely and walkable around every station so that you don’t have to drive to it. Density and transit go hand in hand.
Wasn’t sure where to post this, but I thought it was a cool little quiz that tells you your ideal city based on your answers (preferences on weather, cuisine, walkability, transit, schools, etc). Raleigh was # 7 for me, which I found a little odd because I love it here! I guess we’re not quite close enough to the ocean for my liking. ![]()
mine:
- Virginia Beach
- San Diego
- Tampa
Lol the premise has me laughing and I’m gonna take the quiz. But already question 1 is steering me wrong.
The only places I prefer to be shirtless are my bed and the shower. The pool is acceptable. But I don’t want winter, which is the point of the question. Do I answer honestly or try to understand what they’re getting at? Tis a brain teaser!
That question gave me a chuckle too
My top 3:
- Richmond, VA
- Atlanta, GA
- Lexington, KY
Durham came in at #7 and Raleigh at #10. ![]()
Edit: This was fun. Thanks for sharing!
Lol it put Portland, OR as #1 which is hilarious cuz I wanted to move there before I chose Raleigh 20 years ago, and it’s gotten worse since then. I went there and did have a good time back then, just couldn’t find a biotech job. Funny enough, we actually visited Portland last year and I did enjoy it, but Raleigh is 10x better for me.
The rest of the top ones made no sense. Tampa and shit… Come on.
Ironically Raleigh was like #18 and Boston where I actually would probably live now that I can afford it (except for the winters) was way way down.
I think the real answer is probably Denver, but this quiz is rigged! ![]()
I would actually be ok in Atlanta or Richmond too.
