Smoky Hollow Phases 1, 2, and 3

that’s great! I had it happen at a coffee shop one time, hung out w/owner for like 2 hrs! Love those (a coffee shop that is in our area here!)

I can’t remember where this was discussed but the Capital over Peace bridge is getting some embellishments right now. Might be signage for the turn lane. Hard to tell at this stage.

According to my leasing guy at The Line, they’re leasing apartments a lottt quicker than expected, some floor plans already sold out. Hopefully this gives more encouragement to push phase 3 through soon.

Wow! That’s incredible to hear. I suspect that it will also give more confidence to retailers who may be sitting on the fence about taking space in the “hollow”.
Bring it all on!

This makes me so happy! You gotta fill the retail if there’s a lot of residents! I expect the commercial tower to be a ghost town for the first half of 2021.

The reality is that it can take months anyway to get tenant space fit up for occupancy.

Artwork going up as we speak

At this speed it should all be done by the end of the year! Maybe the holidays delayed them, but unless the other side is complete, they must be creating each panel on site, by hand, with tiny tools.

just had a quick glimpse but I think the other side hasn’t started yet

You’re correct the other side has not started yet. This artwork sure is getting all kinds of scrutiny, from the amount of time it has taken, to the cost, and even how it looks.

I believe a little context helps fill in the whole story.

  1. The artist could not begin design and framing until the whole project was completed.
  2. The artist lives outside of Seattle, WA (Travel delays)
  3. NCDOT contractors are fabricating the steal grills (they are always behind)
  4. The $1M price isn’t solely to the artist ($40K artist - $880K materials and installation)
  5. The funds came from a transportation fund used for participating in DOT projects.

I wonder why the DOT couldn’t find a NC artist to do this work? There has to be artisans and metal workers that could have done this work, while telling a North Carolina story in doing so.

Yea, that’s my one complaint towards the whole project, they picked an artist on the complete opposite side of the country. Her portfolio is impressive, but there has to be someone locally or at least in this state that can replicate something similar.

Is a similar installation going on the new Wade Avenue bridge over Capital as well?

Eventually yea, but it appears each metal panel is being installed 1 at a time. The Wade Ave Bridge seems to lose another LED light each time I drive by.

I think it’ll be worth it in the end to have the art added but yeah…slow and drawn out process.

This area has seen a lot change in the past few years and I’m looking forward to the future changes on the north east corner of the intersection (Devereux Meadow).

So this orange red paint ties in with the random orange metal siding on the other side. I guess it makes more sense now?
