Smoky Hollow Phases 1, 2, and 3

Walk up window only for sales after a certain time. Limited menu of quick items to sell to the party crowd once the bars close. That way they wont be inside the restaurant trashing the place, but you still get their sales.

   Well then count me out. Plenty of good restaurants to get a proper dinner around town. Meanwhile a “24hr diner” or at least late-nite diner has been on downtown’s “wants” list forever and this guy gotta sound like a boring nerd already shooting that down. Only reason I ever go to a shitty diner is for late night grub. I don’t need an “elevated diner” open normal hours, we literally have Poole’s which is even expanding to be bigger and serve more guests lol

LOL!
For me personally, I couldn’t give two shits about late night food options. I already eat dinner at like 11pm at home, and it’s better than diner food. I have no desire to eat with a bunch of drunk people at 2am like I’m 22 again.

What I do want is better weekend lunch options. You know, the time when most people are off work and looking for stuff to do. We were downtown on Saturday and virtually every restaurant I’ve been wanting to try or go back to doesn’t open till 4 or 5. So frustrating.

I get his point not wanting a bunch of drunk kids turning his spot into a late night waffle house environment but I think a limited menu walk up window after midnight would crush it though

You have to remember that this location is NOT on a public street and he has a landlord with private security running the show. He might not even be allowed to be open that late per his lease.

I’d love to see them open for breakfast/coffee but don’t open at 9a and expect much success.

By 9am I am usually ready for 2nd breakfast, so that could work for me.

9am is the earliest I’m ever awake. I’ll send them a list of my hours so they can adjust their operating schedule accordingly

For comparison the BEC at Biscuit Belly is $10. You can get a single biscuit with gravy for $7.50 tho.

@GucciLittlePig Can you show me how to schedule a post so I can have a message go out at 2am even tho my bedtime is never past 11pm. I want everyone to believe I burn the midnight oil!

I gotta be honest, that’s actually insane LOL. One of the reasons I stan Jubala; good coffee, but the $7.50 BEC biscuit is made on HOUSEMADE biscuits at that. If they can do it, I refuse to believe anyone needs to be charging TEN DOLLARS for a BEC on probably NOT homemade bread.

The ingredients are a pretty low part of the total cost of what you’re eating. You’re mostly paying for real estate, taxes, and staff wages.

Props to Jubala for finding a way to still keep prices relatively low, given how rampant inflation has been.

I think we need to teach Jake how to cook

Pretty sure you can get a breakfast sandwich for around $5 at Watkins.

I’ve driven by that place a million times and always been curious about it. How’s the food?

Is this the place where everything is (or was) named after Confederate political and military figures?

BEC at Big Ed’s costs $5.50

Confirmed $4.50 for a BEC sandwich (unless price went up since last year when this pic was taken)

I eat breakfast there once a week at least and will be devastated if they have to ever close their doors.

The last of it’s kind in Raleigh IMO.

They had a shelf above the bar with a lot of war memorabilia, veteran stuff, and some of it was confederate, yes. They got called out online I think at some point, so it’s not there anymore.

That said, whenever I tell someone about Watkins (which is rare bc I don’t ever want it to get too crowded) they always say “Oh, isn’t that the confederate place.”

I always found that reputation interesting, because it’s honestly the most diverse customer base I’ve seen in Raleigh. Young people, old people, working class, business class, kids, people of all ethnicities/colors just all sitting at the bar talking with each other. Like a real small-town community diner. Wait staff knows most people there by name.

Meanwhile, other establishments hang signs that signal diversity, but most everyone inside looks exactly the same. :man_shrugging:

Not trying to touch a nerve with this, just sticking up for a spot that I think deserves a little more attention.

I mean liver pudding sounds way better than chocolate so already I’m in. But what I really want to know is, are the hobo eggs from free range hobos or caged?

I went, once.

The food was ok, this was back when the Nathan Bedford Forest burger was still on the menu, which I understand has changed, but they were pretty confederate when I went. I didn’t plan on going back when I left.

This pic they posted on their facebook page came many years after my visit: Redirecting...
