I expect the majority of Glenwood South residents to support the rezoning.
Only GSNC Members have been asked to complete the survey. If you want to receive surveys, event invitations and other news from the neighborhood you need to Join the GSNC under the category of “resident”, “business” or as a “friend”.
I guess I never signed up even though Karla and I have been going to the mixers. Just filled out the form. Is it possible to get the survey and be included in the data being presented to CC?
Meanwhile in Charlotte… they get buildings with better design and height (not saying this is fantastic… but butter than what Raleigh has been seeing in my opinion) I think this would look great in Smok(e)y Phase II. Although, they too have a massive exposed parking deck.
I would love to see Smok(e)y Phase III look like a redesigned John Handcock building… If I were Kane, I would put in a building that is amazing and could even call it the “Kane Tower” or something to that nature. His iconic signature building for Raleigh.
I like that building. It fits in with the surrounding area really well but it also obviously stands out (and up). It’s a basic building with nothing fancy but they added just enough elements to make it look nice. It could have been just a bland curtain wall but I like the “steel”
There’s a Facebook event for the public hearing on Tuesday for those that are into that sort of thing. Let’s coordinate with everyone, really show some support.
Here is Stef’s response to me…helps set the stage for the Tuesday meeting.

I am neither pro-growth nor anti-growth. I support and encourage growth that makes sense in that it respects the environment and is supported by adequate infrastructure. We must grow in a way that accommodates all the new people, businesses, and opportunities that want to come to Raleigh. At the same time we need to preserve those things that are attracting folks here in the first place and that helps create a wonderful quality of life for both newcomers and longtime residents.
I will be asking for a traffic impact analysis with regard to the 40-story tower. I have also asked staff for some further analysis of the size of the contribution offered towards affordable housing. I will make my decision after getting that additional information.
I have met with the Crabtree developers and their proposal sounds very attractive to me. I want to learn more, but currently have a very favorable view.
I also need to learn more about the stadium project being proposed for Downtown South. I do have some concerns about that, but again need additional information.
I take my responsibility on Council very seriously and I do not have a knee-jerk reaction to any proposals that come before us. The devil is usually in the details and I try my best to carefully evaluate each proposal on its own merits.
So she doesn’t want a tall building downtown or a stadium on vacant land needing revitalization, but she’s fine with a tower in the suburbs on an incredibly trafficky road? God she needs to go …
Couldn’t have said it better myself, that is some extremely inconsistent and bass-ackwards decision making on her part. Makes me wonder if she’s getting campaign $ from the Crabtree management.
She says she needs to “see the traffic studies” before signing off on a re-zoning in the most urban-intensive land in the city, near BRT, yet is excited about a 30-story tower going into an area that is already a traffic-choked nightmare 18 hours a day. It’s mind-boggling. And I’m not picking on her specifically, because I bet Cox is going to say the same thing.
I think it is more likely that she has something against Kane. The NIMBYs/No Growthers on Nextdoor claim the Council has given him carte blanche approvals on projects. So she’s going to fix that. Back to Cox and his view that tall buildings should be in the DT core and taper down … isn’t that the planning commissions’s role?
