Raleigh In The News around the country/world

Interesting that 9 of the top 10 are in TX, FL, and NC; correlates nicely with the census results yesterday.

Not sure if folks saw, but Pete Buttigieg and Doug Emhoff were at Raleigh Union Station today for the 50th anniversary of Amtrak. Talking about investments along the rail corridor, connecting Raleigh to Richmond, etc. My daughter and I got to meet the 2nd Gentleman, so that was cool! We were at Weaver Street Market getting groceries on the bike and saw the government brigade of cars and popped over, haha! Pretty exciting!

Wasn’t Pete Buttigieg last stop at RUS last year on the campaign trail right before he dropped out, and right as Covid hit? I seem to remember hearing about him having a campaign event there.

Interesting that we’re like top of everything and then not even ranked in the “hospitality” category

That actually doesn’t surprise me. Raleigh doesn’t have a tourism brand at all. If Raleigh had even half the tourism brand of Austin or Nashville, I can’t even imagine how much growth we’d be seeing.

With our youth / college soccer brand and our college basketball branding I wonder why nobody has tried to make a youth tournament
sports epicenter type development that hosts huge tournaments. Those can bring in 100k people a weekend.

Is this what you’re talking about?

It’s supposed to go at Cary Town Center, next to the competitive swimming arena of Triangle Aquatic Center, across the road from WakeMed soccer complex and the cross country course… seems like a pretty decent start, anyway.

Disney’s Wide World of Sports it is not, though…

That is indeed a pretty decent start! Nothing will ever touch Orlando because you can just tell the kids they’re going to Disney :joy:
Volleyball and cheerleading is also surprisingly huge competition wise but I think we already host that at the downtown convention center

Don’t forget USA Baseball on the other side of town!

This is probably a long shot, but would be a big deal:

I don’t think it’s a longshot at all. The Triangle hosted the US Olympic Festival back in 1987 and it was a huge success. With all of the university and professional resources of the Triangle, I don’t see a problem at all hosting such an event.

About 25 to 30 filming production trailers setup behind the NC State Bar, full of crew and security. Anyone know if something is being filmed in Raleigh atm?

Drove by Union Square and there were stage lights outside on the north side.

I’m sure most don’t care about this type of content however spot all the DTR locations in Safiya’s new youtube video:

That’s a whole of downtown and ITB going on there.

The Unicorn which is the CBS sitcom set in Raleigh has been canceled after two seasons.

I hope a streaming service picks up the series for a Season 3; really liked the show.
